Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder might be going solo but might just be talking about surfing
With the soundtrack of the Sean Penn-directed Into The Wild hitting US stores this week, rumours are abounding at the possibility of further Eddie Vedder solo material being recorded / released, or even a solo tour. Vedder was hand-picked by Penn to record the songs for the film’s soundtrack. In an interview with Rolling Stone he says:
“If you surf fifty-foot waves all the time, you can’t try too many new things, because fifty-foot waves are kind of life and death. Playing big shows is like that. So you want to take on some smaller waves to rework or refine what you do, and then take it back to the big surf.”
Does this mean further solo action is in the offing, or has he satisfied his desire to “take on some smaller waves”? Is he actually just talking about surfing? Is he talking about performing while surfing? Or surfing while performing?

He seems like a very direct guy. I hope he’s talking about surfing. Pearl Jam is that last band that matters. His solo album is great, to be sure.

When lead singers start releasing solo albums, the rest of the band traditionally starts double-checking their retirement plans. But Vedder points out that he is the last of Pearl Jam’s five members to release his own record. “I was the holdout,” he says. “We’ve been a group for a long time, and we will continue to be so, I hope, for a really long time.”

Let’s not get ridiculous. I love Pearl Jam as much as the next guy. But, to be sure, there are still a bunch of bands “that matter.”
Some bands that still matter to me… King’s X, the Lemonheads, Nada Surf, Sonic Youth, Bad Religion, Duncan Sheik.
