Amy Winehouse up for six grammes- I mean, Grammys

The bizarre success / happiness paradox that is Amy Winehouse’s life continues. Just as reports come through that she’s seeking help for her drug problem(s), she goes and gets herself nominated for no fewer than six Grammy awards. No mean feat. And they aren’t pootling little categories, either – we’re talking Album of The Year, Song Of The year, etc.
It’s interesting; when Back To Black was released I recall it receiving decent reviews, but not amazing notices across the board or anything. And a lot of the attention seemed to go on Mark Ronson’s production, once the glee at the ultra-autobiographical lyrics had died down. Nevertheless, there’s always a part of me that feels chuffed if a British artist gets any recognition from whatever old duffers draw these nominations up.
Elsewhere, Foo Fighters’ decidely average Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace gets a few nods (hmm, don’t recall their best album, The Color And The Shape, getting much Grammy love); while Feist, who this year released her FOURTH solo album, is up for Best New Artist.
That’s the Grammys for you, though. They’re historically wrong-headed and out of step with what’s happening. I could go on, but I think this amusingly bewildered article from VillageVoice.com puts it better than I could…
