I Don't Like Them As Much As I'm Supposed To

arctic+monkey.jpgJust about everyone loves the Arctic Monkeys don’t they? I don’t get it. I don’t know what it is but they just leave me cold. I like the fact that there’s a buncha kids running around this town making a proper racket and singing in their own accents as opposed to adopting an American, or worse still, a London accent. However, to me, every time I hear ‘em, I can’t help but hear the ghost of Shed Seven.

When I was at school, I used to do impressions of Rick Witter, much to the mirth of my mates. Listen to ‘Speakeasy’ and listen to the way he sings “one in a million” or “wunnina mill-yurn”. As daft as it may sound to the Arctic Monkey-ite, I can hear that same cartoon delivery. I guess that, geographically, the two bands aren’t that far apart and I’m aware that musically, they couldn’t be more different. However, I can’t ever love a band that reminds me of Shed Seven. Ver Monkeys don’t inspire the same ire that many of their peers do, so I don’t get all angry when they do well or release a single or [insert absolutely anything here]. I just don’t like them as much as I’m supposed to…

    Ah yes, the comparisons problem/disorder.
Listen to “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not” for a week.
Then listen to “Favourite Worst Nightmare” for 2-3 weeks. Maybe a few b-sides such as The Bakery, Nettles, Plastic Tramp, Settle For A Draw etc
Then get back to us in a month.

OK, u may not like them, that’s fine – hey, not everyone likes the same things…
BUT u have to admit they’re REALLY good.

You may not like them, but if you listen to all of their songs, you’ll have to admit their the most talented and prolific band in the world. About 70 brilliant songs in about 2.5 years isn’t bad going, and thats before you even start on The Last Shadow puppets, Alex’s side project and the second best band in the world behind the monkeys.
