Sony's Blu-Ray audio arrives just as CDs become coasters/frisbees/mirrors
I put up a poll about downloading the other day, with the most popular response showing that, yes, a lot of people do download tracks they already own on CD. The reason? Convenience – or, if you want to be a little more cutting, laziness. However you look at it, the future for CDs looks bleak if people can’t even be bothered to put them in their players.
So what could save CDs? A new format, perhaps? Well, fresh from scoring a victory over Toshiba’s HD-DVD format, Sony, perhaps feeling a little giddy, have created Blu-ray audio.
The first music album on Blu-ray will be released on Norwegian record label 2L. It will be called “Divertimenti”, and is by a Norwegian orchestra called the Trondheim Soloists.
I have to say that as far as product launches go this sounds about as exciting as a Sony executive pooing on a disc and flinging it into a tree. Actually, no – it’s considerably less exciting than that.
So that’s Blu-ray audio, then. If you buy “Divertimenti”, do let me know how it sounds and if it’s the saviour of physical music releases and all that.
