Bye bye, The Long Blondes :(
Shame. I was obsessed with The Long Blondes for about two weeks eighteen months ago and, although my liking for them never quite reached such giddy stratospheres (ha!) again, I retained a fair amount of fondness for them. And they’ve gone and split up.
I can’t help respecting acts who emerge with not only terrific songs but a well thought out approach to how they want to look and the image they want to project. I have no truck with the whole “it’s just about the music, man” approach. The Long Blondes understood this and indulged in a trashy glamour aesthetic that appealed to students and grown-up pop music fans alike.
I’d wager that many of the fashion decisions came from charismatic lead singer Kate Jackson. Sadly guitarist Dorian Cox, who wrote much of the material, suffered a stroke earlier this year which has precipitated the band’s split. Jackson is going to embark on a solo career, which will excite fans who have seen her as a bit of a femi-Jarvis.
Bye bye then, The Long Blondes. For a handy five-pack of reasons why you should have loved them check out The Lipster; meanwhile, was “Giddy Stratospheres”:
