Georgia's Eurovision 2009 entry unlikely to trouble Russian pop charts

Lost In Translation, Music News

vladimir_putin.jpgGeorgia’s entry for Eurovision 2009 – which will be held in Moscow – is called “We Don’t Wanna Put In”, and is a thinly-veiled dig at Russian president Vladimir Putin.
Nothing can go wrong with that. Nobody who speaks out against Russia these days gets into any bother at all. Sure, the countries had a bit of a war-type situation over South Ossetia in 2008, but who didn’t? I’m positive Russia will take this gentle ribbing in Europe’s largest annual televised song contest in good humour, even if it is happening on their own soil.
I’m not sure we can expect the same cuddly approach from The Trammps though, whose “Disco Inferno” provides rather blatant “inspiration” to Stefane & 3G’s ditty. Those 70s disco acts can be fucking brutal.
Listen to “We Don’t Wanna Put In” after the jump.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Zero" could be a chart hero

yeah_yeah_yeahs.jpg
Stereogum posted the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs song “Zero”, from forthcoming album It’s Blitz, the other day.
The comments from the none-more-indie crowd are predictably cynical because the song – gasp - features synths and quite shiny production. These elements, of course, mean it could be a huge mainstream hit. Especially if it ends up being plastered over 90210 or Gossip Girl or something. You know, one of those scenes in a club when somebody’s just had their drink spiked?
It might not instantly sound like a hit, but those synths will be stuck in your head very soon…

Air France's "No Excuses" video is "visually stunning"/"rather boring"

Music News, Video

Like the video for one of their previous single “Collapsing At Your Doorstep”, “No Excuses” focuses on man’s attempts to harness nature’s capricious characteristics for his own ends. While that clip featured wind turbines, here a surfer does battle with the unforgiving sea beneath a slate-grey sky.
Or: this is four minutes of a bloke surfing.

Fever Ray's "When I Grow Up" video confirms Karin Dreijer does might in fact have a face

Remember when you were young, and that story went around the town about the deranged lady who broke into that rich family’s back garden and spent all night throwing shapes on the diving board of their pool while dressed as a Native American scarecrow?
That’s the new Fever Ray video. Good old scary Karin Dreijer actually shows us part of her face in this clip, which suggests her Fever Ray project might be the point at which the spooksome masks are finally cast aside.
“When I Grow Up”, like Fever Ray’s first single “If I Had A Heart”, unsettles while dangling just enough hook to make you want to listen to it again immediately.
I think I might be falling in love with the Swedish weirdo, you know. See if you feel the same after the jump.
*UPDATE* Er, this probably isn’t actually Karin in the video after all. BUT STILL (?!).

Simian Mobile Disco's "Synthesise" video is dottier than your grandmother

Music News, Video

If you enjoyed the acid house flourishes of the likes of “It’s The Beat” from Simian Mobile Disco‘s debut album Attack Decay Sustain Release, “Synthesise” should tickle your synapses nicely. It comes from their as-yet-untitled second album, due for release later this year.
The video, with its dots and blobs, is a bit like a nu-rave colour-blindness test. What? You can’t see those vibrant purples and oranges??
(Warning: contains lots of flashing images and stuff)

Spinnerette's Brody Dalle doesn't just appeal to longhairs anymore

brody_dalle_spinnerette.jpgHer off The Distillers, Brody Dalle (left; click image to enlarge), has long been a “pin-up” for males who think it’s sissy to fancy women who aren’t plastered in tattoos. I was never the biggest fan of The Distillers – “Drain The Blood” aside – so was interested to hear she’d formed a new, slightly more accessible band. They’ve been tinkering away for a while, but you can actually download some of their stuff now.

Tah Mac on the ROAD to lavish lifestyle (geddit, etc)

Music News, Up-And-Coming Acts, Video

Last night I went to see a young man who calls himself Tah Mac. This is him in his new video, “Lavish Lifestyle”:

It’s quite a catchy number, is not it? He reminds me a bit of Sisqo, only I believe he may be even shorter.
However, do you get the impression “Lavish Lifestyle” was penned, recorded and filmed before the global economy went and shat itself?

Should Rihanna dump Chris Brown and go out with me instead?

Now, hold on. I know that headline looks shockingly opportunistic given the fact nobody has yet been found guilty of anything following Rihanna’s alleged beating at the hands of R&B Chris, Chris Brown.
However, even before this alleged event I suspected the expressionless Barbadian beauty would be better off with me. It’s not rocket science, guys. Check out what I can offer after the jump, and VOTE IN MY POLL.

An already excitingly electro-packed 2009 just got another shot of excitingfulness with the news that French weirdo producer Mirwais is to return as part of a duo called Y.A.S.
Mirwais produced Madonna’s “Music” and also released the album Production, from which sprang the classic woozy disco science of “Naive Song” and, well, “Disco Science”.
Now he’s teamed up with a lady named Yasmine Hamdan to create:
THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL ELECTRO PROJECT THAT PLACES ARABIC LANGUAGE AT THE CENTER OF POP CULTURE!
That’s how their MySpace puts it, anyway (their shouty capitals/American spelling).

Ex-Bad Boy artist writes book about Diddy and Bad Boy Entertainment, may require lawyer

Music News, Naughty Rappers

dancing_with_the_devil.jpg“Who he is is exactly who he is,” says ex-Bad Boy rapper Mark Curry (no, not that Mark Curry) of his ex-boss Diddy. If that statement is your kind of truth, you can expect a lot more of it in his new book, the subtly-titled Dancing With The Devil.
Curry appeared on Diddy’s 2001 hit “Bad Boy For Life”, which I’m not ashamed to say I bloody love. “We-ain’t… going-nowhere… we-can’t-be-stopped-now, cuz it’s Bad Boy for life.” You know, I’m going to fire that song up right now.
So anyway, Mark Curry has a fair bit to say about his time as Diddy’s employee. Remember how Diddy used to appear in just about every video anyone on his label ever put out? Curry reckons Diddy charged for those appearances.
