bjork Festivals round up: Human League, Kasabian, M.I.A. and Bjork rock out
Can someone tell me how it got to September already? Despite a severe lack of sunshine, it’s creeping from summer towards autumn - and taking festival season with it. Here’s the lowdown on the latest weekend of action.
- Buzzword of the weekend at 80s bonanza Retrofest? ‘Nostalgia’, according to The Herald. Scotland’s stunning Culzean Castle played host to what was trumpeted as ‘the biggest 80s line-up since Live Aid’. Kajagoogoo and co certainly delivered, but it seems the Human League missed that ‘nostalgia’ brief - slightly disappointing the crowd by steering away from the classics and towards a politically charged (and no doubt slightly less entertaining) setlist. Still, at least the heckles were good.

- Jersey Live’s stars were feeling mischievous this weekend, reports the NME. Young upstarts the Pigeon Detectives took a subconscious dig at headliners Kasabian when the crowd announced they’d rather see the former than the latter during one set. And the shiny helmets of the Super Furry Animals meant system overload for the sedate Channel Isle. They managed to blow up the PA system during a particularly loud rendition of ‘Receptacle For The Respectable’. Now that’s rock n’ roll.
- As previously reported here at MCT, the Electric Picnic was marred by the death of a 23-year-old man. In happier news, gourmet burritos abounded as Bjork headlined in a typical kooky outfit and the sun even came out for the ride.
- Connect has previously been labelled a ‘middle-class Glastonbury’ - though whether that’s meant as a compliment or a criticism is anyone’s guess. This year’s instalment was certainly mud-filled but had its fair share of triumphs and failures. In the triumph corner - Bjork. A 10-piece brass band helped her close the show. See also Primal Scream, who continued their tradition of using the 2007 festival season to showcase some new tunes. On the not-so-triumphant side of things - M.I.A. Her set got cut short after she invited fans to join her on stage… and over 100 enthusiastically took her up on the offer. Whoops.
