Bob Dylan - Once folkie, now car salesman
Once upon a time, a young Bob Dylan sang “you’re only a pawn in their game” and everyone swooned at how brave he was. Fast forward to the present day and Mr Zimmerman has an advert for iTunes under his belt, sold an album through Starbucks and now he’s fronting a campaign for Cadillac. The times, it seems, are indeed a-changing when a once anti-commercial folk singer can sign up to the devil and sell his arse to the highest bidder. What next? Bob Dylan pop tarts?
According to Uncut, the ad for the new Cadillac Escalade sees Dylan driving through the desert, accompanied by Smog’s ‘Hell’ track. Then, at the close of the commercial, Dylan says “What’s life without the occasional detour?’ Indeed Bob… a detour to the bank with salty muck all over your hands and face. Altogether now “the pump don’t work cuz the vandals took the handle…” Click over to see the ad spot.

Bob Dylan was never an anti-commercial folk-singer. He signed to Columbia Records when he was 20 years old. This article mereley displays a childish lack of understanding of the world.
ohhh evil ads! and I guess this webpage doesn’t have ads, or links to commercial enterprises (like youtube), riiiiight?
Yes.. it’s only been about 40 years since Bob made it clear he’s not the protest king, he’s not Jesus, he’s not out to save the world for you… It’s not your fault that in all that time, you still haven’t gotten it through your head. Obviously, it’s Dylan’s fault. After all, regardless of the fact that you’re an adult, Dylan still owes you something. All the music, the artwork, the performances, they aren’t nearly enough. He just owes you so much, doesn’t he?
Who cares if he’s gone ‘commercial’
If you like his music then you like his music
Oh My…
What happened?
The world doesn’t work exactly as you want it to?
When are you people going to get it.
He was never a “protest singer” or “the voice of a generation”
From the very first he kept trying to tell people that. Listen to his very earliest interviews, Studs Terkle and others… he was clearly nervous with all of that and didn’t want those labels.
At the most basic level that is what Bob is about, stop labeling me and I’m not your effing trained monkey.
“Commercial and Sold Out”
For 50 years I’ve been hearing those words.
I still don’t get what it means. Do you say your Doctor sold out or went commercial because he got newer equipment, or accepted freebies and kickback from pharma salesmen to push the newest drug?
Go be a purist on your own time. The forest awaits.
Hey! Get off Bob’s back! If you don’t like what he is doing, then leave him alone. He didn’t tell YOU to buy a Cadillac or buy his album. He can do whatever he wants, this is America. Are you an American, or a communist? He said it himself: “The road is rapidly changin’. Get out of the new one if you can’t led a hand.” So get the hell out of the way you retarded little hypocrite!
