Jimmy Eat World - “Always Be” video

Music News, Video

Aw, look at these young pups larking about in the museum. Actually, they’re probably having a little too much fun. Don’t they know this is a place for learning?
The song itself is a typically rousing fringe-shaker. Mr Eat World is almost in danger of blinding himself with his “bangs”, frankly. Like much of JEW’s output this song would do well over the closing credits of a teen drama, if the video didn’t have higher production values than the movie it might soundtrack.

Arctic Monkeys win award you’ve probably never heard of

Or maybe you have, I don’t know. In these days of “awards fatigue” it’s hard to keep track of all the ceremonies and whatnot. Personally I only allocate a certain amount of my brain to these kinds of things, and sadly the South Bank show awards didn’t make the cut.
Anyway, Arctic Monkeys continue to blaze a trail across the awards season. Following their numerous nominations for the NME awards the other day, they took the Best Pop prize award at the South Bank show awards. Looks like not turning up for award shows might up your chances of winning subsequent prizes…

Review - The Five Aces new LP, Shout and Shimmy!

Music News

fiveaces Review The Five Aces new LP, Shout and Shimmy!Too many bands look toward the sixties thinkin’ ‘that sounds great! I’ll have some of that!’ and then end up sounding nothing like the records they love. Is it a production thing? A songwriting thing? A mastering thing even? Whatever it is, The Five Aces have it buckets. Their new LP, Shout and Shimmy! (that’s an order) is a soulful cut that’s all killer and no filler. Hell, even Mark Lamarr is a fan… and if that doesn’t strike a chord with you, you must be dead from the waist down, brotha.
It’s quite hard to pin down what the main force behind this LP is. It’s a magpie of an album that takes in Ray Charles, Booker T & The MGs, Mod, soul… even bebop. Either way, Shout and Shimmy! is the sound of a drinking session with a load of hip-cats and gorgeous gals showing their moves way past bedtime. You think Amy Winehouse has the soul? Kid, you better see doctor Five Ace.

Dispatches From Beardsville - Neil Young ‘Archives’ won’t see CD release; fans go mad

Dispatches From Beardsville, Music News

Oh dear. Neil Young has made everyone go a bit mental. Why? Well, everyone has been getting rather excited over the prospect of his ‘Archives’ series. This series was to comprise of boxsets and live releases documenting his entire career through unreleased studio and live recordings. That’s everything from Buffalo Springfield through Crosby Stills Nash and Young, to solo.
Young, speaking to US publication Hollywood Reporter at the premiere of the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young film ‘Deja Vu’ at the Sundance Film Festival, has said that the first volume will now only be presented on the new Blu-Ray format and DVD. Yep. That’s no CD, vinyl or download. Young said: “I know it’s in technical production now, but it’s only coming out on Blu-ray and DVD. There won’t be CDs. Technology has caught up to what the concept was in the first place [and] how we’re able to actually present it. But there’s no doubt it will come out this year.”

Lost in Translation - Ivan Mládek

Lost In Translation, Video

I’d love to tell you more about Ivan Mládek and his jaunty Czech pop hit, Jožin z bažin… but I can’t. Firstly, I don’t speak the lingo and secondly, it’s too odd to pick to bits. The video features dancing that looks like a cross between needing a wee and mild Parkinson’s, and has a bloke making a weird noise with a bit of hose or something. Very peculiar indeed.

Erykah Badu re-enacts classic album covers in “Honey” video

A nice tribute to digging for vinyl in record stores (remember those?), this video from Erykah Badu exhibits an endearing sense of humour I’d never really associated with her previously. There’s a chance that’s because I’m almost wholly ignorant of her back catalogue, I admit. Look out for references to album covers from Grace Jones, De La Soul and The Beatles amongst others.
The song itself has a terrific summer-soul swing to it and will sound great in your local cocktail emporium, should you be lucky enough to have one.
*EDIT* Bugger. It’s been removed. Will repost it once it resurfaces…

bond Penguin and MySpace want you to write the theme tune for the new James Bond... book?!Yep, the new Bond book, Devil May Care, which is being penned by Sebastian Faulks, needs a theme tune. I know, that’s what I thought. But apparently the tune will be used on the audio book release, which comes out the same day - 28th May this year.
Musos are encouraged to submit their entries to the Devil May Care MySpace page by 25th February. A shortlist will be drawn up by the judges - including Brit-Soul legend Jazzie B - before voting is opened to the public on 3rd March.
Got that? Then get composing. Just make sure it’s better than that rubbish Madonna Bond theme from a few years back or you will get NOWHERE.

First they were; then they weren’t. And, sadly for newly-divorced women in their early thirties, it looks like the “weren’t”s have it. But let’s not let that prevent us from reminiscing over “Hangin’ Tough”. I think it might be time to bring that weird elbow-swinging dance move back, you know.

Hey Beatles! You can play in Israel now! What? They split up?

Music News

Israel has invited the remaining members of The Beatles to visit their country now that a 43-year ban on them had been lifted. The nation banned the Fabs from performing there back in ‘65 over fears that their music would corrupt the youth. Get that? A country almost constantly at war, worried about a silly little beat combo.
Anyway, back to now, and the Israeli ambassador to London, Ron Prosor, is calling on Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr to visit the country this May as part of its 60th anniversary celebrations. Mr Prosor is currently in Liverpool after marking Holocaust Memorial Day there and is due to meet up with John Lennon’s sister Julia Baird to hand her an official letter of apology over the ban. Although surely one of the living members of the group would be a better recipient? Anyway, there you go. Israel LUVS Beatles 4eva (IDST). [via Gigwise]
