Big news in the world of pop, squawky birds and scarecrows this week. A man called Marlon Brooks from Norfolk hit upon the idea of a new character to protect his crops, reasoning that there’s not much scarier than a boozed-up Wino. He has been proven correct, with birds apparently scared out of their feathers by the soused mannequin.

Are you a student? Do you like to find yourself? Are you a friend of the trees? If you answered yes to any of these, then chances are you’re a fan of Australian best selling singer and master of many instruments, Xavier Rudd (and cursing me for my stereotyping). If you’re not - get on it dooode.
Recommended to me by my surfy, dready and folky friends (that’s THREE whole friends!) I concluded the time was right to find out what all the *ahem* Ruddy fuss was about.
Now, you have the chance to check out this festival favourite too. FOR FREE!! Being the generous creatures we are, we have TWO pairs of fabulous Xavier Rudd tickets to give away for next week’s gig in Bristol. All you need to do is click below and answer our simple question.

Rave Digging

Pssshhhhhhwwwww-super-super-super-pppssssssshhhhhhwwww. Etc. Ganja Kru’s classic drum n’bass floorshaker might not strictly be rave in the white gloves n’whistles sense of the term, but it has a similarly mentalizing effect on a dancefloor. Ah, I remember hearing this in a London club back in 19**. My bowels ruptured due to the bassline. Terrible mess, it was. Good times.

Rihanna’s new video, for “Disturbia”, is directed by famed directing person David LaChappelle, and ticks a number of strangely-shaped boxes. The labels on those boxes read:
- No eyeballs
- Mad Max’s stylist
- Vague S&M overtones
- A bedframe with no mattress
- Smoking
None of which, naturally, manages to make Rihanna look anything less than devastatingly attractive. Let’s face it, you could dress her in a suit made of elephant poo and she’d still have a certain je ne sais quoi. Oh yeah, the song’s alright an’ all.
Check out the not-really-shocking-at-all video after the jumpitude.

What’s the skinny on festivals set to take place this weekend, then?

- South Island Music Festival takes place in Margate, Kent, in case you didn’t know. Performing: The Hoosiers, Scouting For Girls, UB40. SUICIDE-INDUCING!
- And here are a couple of previews of The Secret Garden Party, which looks like it should be delightful. INTERESTING IF YOU’RE ATTENDING!

Do you know anyone who’s ever placed a bet on the Mercury Music Prize? The odds for each artist always seem to be the main focus of the award, for some reason - it’s become less a prize awarded for artistic merit, more some kind of weird music-related version of the Grand National.
I wonder if that’s the real reason the music industry is making less money these days - record company execs throwing moolah at the tastiest action each year? I’m sure The Brits isn’t anticipated with such Paddy Power-friendly interest each year.
I can barely summon the energy to care about the list of nominees, let alone who will win. And I can’t reeeally be bothered to get on my high horse about why it’s not worth caring about, either. Perhaps I just need a holiday.
Anyway, here are this year’s nominations. Neon Neon or Laura Marling should win. PLACE YOUR BETS NOW and so on.

I was supposed to go to Melt! Festival in Germany at the weekend, but couldn’t make it in the end. I haven’t found much written about the event, but the two-part review at bodytonicmusic.com has left me pretty glad I didn’t attend.
Firstly, no drugs. Honestly. Look, festival organisers, if you can’t provide lots of yummy crackpills, don’t bother opening the gates. Secondly, it sounds like the weather can cause a fair amount of bother on mainland Europe as well here in Blighty.

In the melee of festivals littering the summer season it’s inevitable that some will get more coverage than others.
I am, however, shocked to somewhere near my very core at the lack of coverage the Glade Festival has received. I was going to do a round-up of links for this ecelctic event, but there’s flip all out there, really.
Glade, do you have PR people? You might want to ask them what they’ve been up to recently.
In the meantime, here’s someone who was disappointed by the sound levels and was then arrested for possessing ketamine; and here’s someone who lost their zebra.
Can’t wait for next year! :(
Did you attend Glade? Fancy answering some questions so people can judge whether it’s worth attending in future? Mail stuart(at)shinymedia.com and I’ll send some In-Tents Questioning out to thee
