Happy Independents Day!
Music News, Up-And-Coming Acts
Before you accuse me of getting all Stateside on yo’ ass, let me explain. Today is the 4th of July. And yes, today gun-toting burger-eating Americans (Stereotyping? Me? Never!) will be celebrating their state of independence across the pond.
However, today also marks the celebration of a much more important event (in my eyes). Almost 50 years on from the birth of Island Records, celebrating the wondrous rise of independent record labels, today is Independents Day.
Why celebrate? Let’s examine the evidence… Joy Division, The Specials, New Order, The Smiths - the list goes on and on… Some might say it’s indie labels that have shaped our music today, bringing us something different when the big labels cowered in fear of a flop.
And what better way to celebrate, than a traditional commemorative plate disc? Independents Day Recordings bring you ‘Independents Day - ID08′, a double discer featuring “a unique line-up of top indie artists covering classic indie tracks” including Feeder, The Editors, Maximo Park, Prodigy, Jose Gonzales, Jack Penate, The Cribs and many more. Plus, a second CD showcases some of today’s up and coming stars from the current indie scene. Lemme attit!
