In-Tents Questioning

clarejoslin In Tents Questioning: Carling Weekend (Reading) Clare Joslin1. Kindly tell us your name, age and where you’re from. Now.
Well Cilla, my name’s Clare, I’m 25 years old and I’m from Bristol.
2. Which festival have you recently attended?
After missing out on Reading festival weekend tickets, I managed to blag a Sunday ticket so went for that day.
3. Have you attended this festival before? If yes, how does this year compare?
Yes, I have. This year was darn good but it’s difficult to top Placebo and Maximo Park (last year) in my eyes.
4. Which act gave the best performance, and why?
Nine Inch Nails, by far. They were astounding. The power in “the pit” was unbelievable. Trent Reznor is much more imposing now he’s beefed up than in his poncey “long hair and make-up” days.

5. If you could have promoted one act on the bill to headline status, who would you choose? Why?
It’s a controversial answer but probably LostProphets. They deserve it, having worked so hard in America after recent record company failings. Despite selling out arena tours in the UK, they weren’t above printing their own flyers and hitting the streets to get people to their US gigs. Plus, it’s always good to see circle pits and the “wall of death” at a festival - diolch boyos!
6. Did your opinion of any acts change radically as a result of their performance?
Yeah, the Maccabees were much better live than I expected. I think the singer may have a screw loose though. Also Sunshine Underground – I’d never heard them before, but they were pretty good.
7. Nicest surprise / biggest disappointment (music-related or otherwise)?
My ability to take some smashing ‘Pumpkins pics / my inability to capture any decent Trent Reznor shots – too much hand shake from the excitement, methinks.
8. What was the best heckle you heard?
“Oi, Wentz! Where’s Ashlee?!” (…I didn’t hear very many)
9. Any high-quality onstage banter you feel deserves highlighting?
Nothing springs instantly to mind but it is a little blurry… I was wearing rosé tinted specs for most of the day.
10. What was the funniest moment (music-related or otherwise)?
Fall Out Boy won the comedy award for anticipating a bottling and covering Michael Jackson and Huey Lewis songs!
11. Weirdest moment (if different)?
Realising I had the outline of a unicorn in my sunburn due to a poorly-considered accessory choice.
12. Any moments of sheer terror you’d like to share?
Only the prospect of wine being sold in old cola bottles.
13. Anything you wish you’d brought with you?
A backstage pass.
14. Anything you wish you’d left behind?
My dodgy knee and some of the blokes I went with.
15. Please mark the following elements out of 10, with any comments:
General facilities:
8/10. Toilets were clean when you eventually got in them, sound was great, weather helped.
Crowd / audience:
8/10. Enthusiastic for the tunes and happy the sun was out.
Food and drink value for money:
6.5/10. Drink was the same as always, food I can’t tell you about as I forgot to eat all day!
16. Finally – anything else you’d like to mention?
I want a “This aint a scene, it’s a goddamn T-Shirt” top (please).
