It is surely only a matter of time before Janelle Monáe is massive
Galleries, Gone To The Blogs, Up-And-Coming Acts
By which I don’t mean Janelle Monáe eats too many Wagon Wheels. What I mean is - look at her. Is that not the look of a born pop star?
My “bang on trend” colleagues at Catwalk Queen certainly think so, anyway - they’ve devoted one of their galleries to her. Ain’t no higher praise than that in the fashionline world, you know.
Monáe’s music ain’t at all bad either, fortunately, although appearances in GQ will always skew the coverage one receives towards being judged on appearance as opposed to talent.
Isabelle from CQ (as seen on Skype, right)compares her to Dorothy from Wizard Of Oz crossed with Grace Jones; to those references you could probably add Roisin Murphy, Alison Goldfrapp and Fiona Apple. And Prince. And lots of singers from The Olden Days. Basically, such flip-flopping over what she sounds like means she is really rather original, and defies easy pigeonholing. That is A Good Thing.
Having been around for a few years already she’s now had her hair did and signed to P Diddy’s label Bad Boy, so let’s see if this time around she manages to not disappear down the dumperoonie.
Should you wish to listen to some of Janelle Monae’s sounds, and marvel at more photographic representations of how fecking stylish she is, check out her MySpazzle. I would recommend the tune “Many Moons” for a kick-off.
