Pop Heaven: Esser - “Headlock”

I know there’s a site called Men Who Look Like Old Lesbians, but it seems like it’s young lesbians Londoner Ben Esser is looking to for fashion inspiration. Check out the tight Fred Perry shirt and quiffy/shaved hair! That is lesbian hair.
Which is not to say it doesn’t work - indeed there are many things about this early 80s-influenced video that work so well it almost feels too calculated. It’s “on trend” enough to have been picked up by our cousins over at Brandish, after all.
But enough about the fashion - maybe play the video with your eyes closed so that you’re not distracted from the magnificence of the song. “Headlock” is a squelchy, bouncy marvel that deserves to be huge on its own merit, and as its creator is on the reliable Transgressive label, there’s a good chance it will be.
