A new species of beetle named after Roy Orbison
“Anything you want…” How about naming a new type of beetle after you? “…you got it.” Yep. One of the weirder stories I’m-a gonna tell you is that the late Roy Orbison has had a new species of beetle named after him. I don’t mean the car, and I certainly don’t mean a Beatle.
Quentin Wheeler (sounds like a 70s AOR group) who is an entomologist at the Arizona State University, made an announcement at a Roy Orbison tribute concert late last month, where he told a heap of people in black wigs and big black shades that the insect found in India will be called the Orectochilus Orbisonorum. The Big O would have been catchier…
The concert was held at the Center for Film, Media and Popular Culture at the university, where Roy Orbison’s widow Barbara was in attendance. She said of the announcement: “I have never seen an honour like that.” Wheeler explained to Mrs Orbison: “It’s a token of admiration for Roy’s body of work and all you do to keep his music alive.” Ooby Dooby!
