What’s it like being at the front of the crowd at a Katy Perry show?
Oasis to tour the nation’s soulless arenas this autumn
That’s the number you need to be keeping on constant redial this coming Wednesday, 20th August, if you want to snag tickets for Oasis’s autumn tour. You can also try www.oasisinet.com, but let’s face it, we all know that’s going to melt within like two minutes.
The tour starts October 7th at Liverpool Echo Arena (a day after new album Dig Out Your Soul is released), and will proceed for 18 more shows up and down this fair isle. Continue reading for a full list of their UK dates…
Fake band shirts: this could be Canine Doubletake’s big break
Gadgets, Garments, Gifts & Gear
Remember this t-shirt, which allowed you to feel superior, more ironic and more head-up-arse hip than everyone else? Well here’s the next step - t-shirts bearing the names of bands that don’t exist, and hopefully never shall.
Has She & Him’s “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?” video melted your heart yet?
We’ve been listening to She & Him’s album in the office for a while now, but I only just got around to checking out the video for “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?”.
Hitherto known as most women’s fave girl-crush actress, Zooey Deschanel is obviously one of those people with more charisma in her eyelash than most people’s bodies amass in a whole lifetime. Combine that with an endearingly sincere upbeat vibe - and cutesy animation - and you have a vid you can’t help going all “awww!” at. Er, maybe just ignore the pools of blood?
Have your cynicism kissed away after the jump…
Santogold’s “Light’s Out” is doubly brilliant
Music News, Pop Heaven / Pop Hell, Video
This song really reminds me of something, and it’s still driving me nuts that I can’t think of what it is. Or is it just that bit when she sounds a bit like Souxie Soux in general?
Well anyway, it’s a great song and it’s now been accompanied by a great video. There’s just something about that is so… so… now about it. Santogold’s had a steady rise through 2008 - providing the backing for numerous ads and TV shows hasn’t hurt - but this could be the one to send her stratospheric.
Pirate Robot Midget flagrantly glorify stealing of beats
Music News, Up-And-Coming Acts
That Justice album was good, wasn’t it? And Simian Mobile Disco’s was pretty heaveee etc as well, no? But they are now WORTHLESS. Why? Because they are OLD. Listening to them now is literally like listening to a caveman twanging a lute in a plague-ridden cave as dinosaurs provide harmonies. With no amplification. That’s music nowadays, son. It’s all about the now. Yesterday is nowhen. You get the general idea.
Which makes it a jolly good job that Pirate Robot Midget have come along to rip off take inspiration from both acts. It’s also quite nice that they come from Italy and Holland, although I’m unsure as to whether the pirate is Dutch, the robot Italian and the midget some kind of cross-breed, or what. This has not been made clear to me.
Huey Lewis and the News hop aboard the Pineapple Express
Music News, Video, Where Have I Heard That Song Before?
You thought M.I.A’s “Paper Planes” was the theme tune for Seth Rogan’s forthcoming movie Pineapple Express, didn’t you? Can’t blame you really, since it’s been used to great effect on the film’s trailer and has since become a bona fide international hit.
However, although the song was used for the trailer, looking at the disgruntled comments on YouTube it seems it doesn’t appear in the film itself at all.
But fear not, for the official theme is just as noteworthy, having been written and performed by 80s soundtrack faves Huey Lewis and the News. And it’s not a million miles away from the upbeat, horn-festooned sound you’ll associate with Huey (above, click to enlarge) and the chaps, either.
It does have a stoner vibe to it though, which is appropriate for the film but feels a leetle odd coming from a guy who is *checks Wikipedia* 58 years of age.
Kudos to Lewis & co., however, for shoehorning the rather awkward title of the movie into the song’s chorus. See them performing it on Jimmy Kimmel Live over the page…
John McCain’s music taste is pretty darn gay; Barack Obama’s is bizarrely self-obsessed
Been a while since we took a look at how US presidential candidates are using popular culture to endear them to the electorate. And what could be better than a look at what songs each candidate *hearts*?
Let’s get straight to John McCain’s faves. If John Boy was to make you a mixtape (with swirly hand-drawn inlay, I’d hope), you might find his number one choon featuring therein: Abba’s “Dancing Queen”, which also happens to be the official gayest song of all time.
*Short pause for you to picture John McCain twirling around in his bedroom to Abba, possibly while eating ice cream*
Iron Maiden’s Ed Force One seen as bad juju in Africa

I knew Bruce Dickinson had a pilot’s licence, but I had less than no idea that the band had acquired their own frickin’ Boeing 757 decorated in Iron Maiden livery for the purposes of their world tour.
Take “livery” here to mean the famous Iron Maiden lettering and their mascot, Eddie the… the… the big scary thing. The name of the plane? Ed Force One. Pretty cool, huh?
Well, a bit too cool, thank you very much, for an unnamed African country.
