EMI announces Radiohead boxed set - unsurprisingly, it won’t include “In Rainbows”. Will you be buying it?
In a move exactly as dastardly as you’d expect from a recently-spurned major record label, EMI yesterday announced that they’re going to release a boxed set of Radiohead’s first six albums, plus 2001’s live album, I Might Be Wrong. When? Why, a week after the band releases the “In Rainbows” boxed set, of course!
As a way of showing those go-it-alone innovators who’s boss, the seven CD set will also be released on a limited edition USB stick. See? Record companies do get all this new technology stuff! Seriously though, it is pretty encouraging to see majors embracing the fact that there are alternative ways of “consuming” music these days.
The USB stick will cost £79.99 mind you, compared to £39.99 for the CD set. There’s also a download version available for £34.99. The CD version apparently comes in “new digipack sleeves”, which would be exciting if this were 1993.
This all comes a few days after Radiohead announced that the physical version of “In Rainbows” will be released through XL Recordings.
I’d be interested to know what Radiohead fans think of all this. Surely they own all of these CDs anyway? Won’t they see that this is just EMI cashing in as one of their cash cows leaves the building?
In other, quite exciting news for ‘head fans, there are rumours flying about that the band is about to take part in a webcast this Friday. More details at Gigwise.
