I Thought You Were Dead! - Rick Astley! Rick F*cking Astley!

I Thought You Were Dead!

rickastley I Thought You Were Dead! Rick Astley! Rick F*cking Astley!OK, I know this is going to entail me showing my age, but to hell with it. I’m going to throw you a real curveball here, and I just hope you can deal with it.
“Never Gonna Give You Up” - despite selling a bucketload and making his name - was never Rick Astley’s best song. For those too young to know what I’m on about - Astley was kind of the Gareth Gates of the late 80s, and “Never Gonna Give You Up” was the first of many Stock / Aitken / Waterman-produced hits of his. He went on to sell 40 million records worldwide, but turned his back on the whole malarkey in the 90s.
Well, now Asters is planning to hit the stage again, even if it is for only a week. Next May he will apparently perform alongside the likes of Bananarama on the nostalgia circuit.

So anyway, back to my contentious, er, contention.
I contend that “She Wants To Dance With Me” was always Rick’s best song. I’m willing to admit this may be because, unlike “Never Gonna Give You Up”, I haven’t heard it as I’ve weeped into my champagne at every poxy wedding reception I’ve ever been to. See what you think:

No way! Rick wrote that one himself and it wasn’t produced by SAW… it’s OK, but it’s really a second-rate version of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)”.
Mike Stock and Matt Aitken were capable of many other styles than the popified-Hi-NRG they got famous for. For example, the quite classy “It Would Take a Strong, Strong Man”…
