Led Zeppelin go digital with ‘catalogue box’
Good news Zepp-heads! Led Zeppelin’s entire back catalogue is going to be available on Apple’s iTunes. That means… well… you can buy back all the albums you already own on vinyl or CD. Hmmm. Anyways, you can either order the long-players individually or, if you prefer (and have the spare cash) you can opt for a one-click download for $99 that encompasses Zeppelin’s entire 165-song catalog. Available to buy from Nov. 13 on iTunes, you can get lost in a whirl of frenzied guitar licks and primal howls! On the same day, Rhino releases “Mothership,” a 24-track Zeppelin retrospective. Zeppfest!
“We’re really excited for our fans,” iTunes VP Eddy Cue tells Billboard. “Zeppelin is by far, and has been for four years, one of our most requested bands.” About the digital boxed set, Cue says, “We’ve held this out for the special artists that have a significant fan base. It’s probably the best boxed set we’ve ever done, in any kind of price range.”
If owning all those tunes ain’t enough, buyers will also be entered into a very very special competition…
Those who pre-order Zepp’s music from iTunes will be entered into a special prize draw which gives them the chance to win a trip to London, with tickets for the band’s one-off concert on November 26. The three lucky winners will also get the chance to see a private dress rehearsal the day before. That’s a prize and a half, eh?
David Dorn, senior vice president of e-Commerce for Rhino Entertainment, has stated that there will be no live recording of the gig, which is being staged as a tribute to late Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. “They’re not allowing a broadcaster of any kind to record the show and put it out there. The band is recording it for their own archive. They’ll decide what they want to do with it.”
For a while at least, those with tickets will be the only ones who know just how great the show was / wasn’t… Although it’s probably fair to expect that a few illicit clips will be appearing on YouTube. Watch this space.
