Nickelback’s lumbering climb to the top of the charts could break record, hearts
At the weekend Peter Robinson, in The Guardian, wrote a piece about Nickelback’s “Rockstar” which made a lot of sense. He made the point that the song’s lyrics lead you to suspect some kind of satire or postmodern irony is at work - only for the punchline, or whatever it is you’re expecting to confirm your suspicions, never to emerge. “It’s like a Smack The Pony skit without the laughter track,” says Robinson. Maybe I should just have quoted him to begin with.
Now it seems that the song described as “the worst thing of all time” in the same article may go and break a bloody record.
If it reaches number one on the singles chart this weekend, “Rockstar” will have officially spent the longest time getting there. Sixteen weeks it’s been slowly floating to the top, you know. Almost makes you long for the days, ten years or so ago, when songs were in and out of the charts within a fortnight, dunnit?
If you’re not sure what the kerfuffle is about the lyrics, check them out in the video below. Is there some knowing wink we’re missing here? If there was it would be annoying, but at least it would clear things up a bit, and also allow you to hate the song because of its archness rather than its… Nickelbackness. Either way, YouTube commenter LovelyBill may be onto something when he remarks: “This is music for absolute f*cking tits”.
Try not to be blinded by the superstar cameos, now.

Well i take it your not a fan.
:)
I love the song. And the secret to why the song has done so well in the US and UK , is simple.
But your too bias and spiteful , for me to even bother tryin to explain it to.
All i can say is Niockelback are back with a bang in the UK and Ireland.
Goodness, your spelling is all over the place, Dan. Doesn’t really do your argument any favours.
I think the YouTube commenter may have been spot on…
Believe it or not Dan, I’ve defended a couple of ‘back tunes when they’ve come on the office stereo. I just don’t get what “Rockstar”’s point is and it does my head in.
It’s an ok song, kinda catchy. However I agree with the guardian review, is it satire or is it serious? it’s kinda confusing there. If it’s intended to be serious, then from that perspective, the lyrics are clumsy and the song in totality is shallow.
uuuhhh, yeah… as a matter of fact, there is an all knowing wink in there…. Kid does it… and now all the NB boys are while they are takin’ it to the bank. Funny… critics hate them the more money they make, the more charts they pop and the more albums they sell.
Just hang it up, people, you are talking to no one but yourselves out there. ;)
Now, go listen to The State or Curb… grass roots of NB. And I do believe *my* spelling is ’spot on’. (way old slang term there lol)
“is it satire? is it serious?” if you don’t get what the song means then you are fucking idots
why people have always to talk things to death
my god it is a song enjoy it and stop analyzing it to death…it is both satire with a bit of truth in it and it is made for fun
it seems that some people never learned what fun is
@Nina: If the “all knowing wink” only appears in the video, that means the song lacks it.
@lisa: Wash your mouth out with soap.
