Oasis promote Dig Out Your Soul by getting anyone but themselves to play it
Pop star laziness is at something of an all time high these days, what with musicians asking you to make their videos, name their albums and write their songs; hell, one guy even wants you to rustle him up some clothes.
Oasis have taken this trend of fecklessness to the next logical level with the promotion of new album Dig Out Your Soul. Now, I know Noel [right, click to enlarge] isn’t feeling too great right now after his assult by a Canadian tooligan recently, but I think these marketing tactics must have been planned for some time now, so that’s no excuse.
Firstly, NME will be giving away the sheet music and lyrics for three new songs so you can bloody well get on with playing them yourself…
“Bag It Up”, “The Turning” and “(Get Off Your) High Horse Lady”. The NME Dig Out Your Soul Songbook will be free with the September 17th issue of the magazine. In a cute nod to the era that spawned the band, the songbook will also include a CD-ROM full of photos and stuff as well. CD-ROMs are what we had to put up with before DVDs came along, kids.
So step one: get the fans to play the songs themselves. Step two, even more cannily, is to get some buskers to go around New York playing songs from the album. This is happening this very day, so if you happen to be passing by Grand Central Station, Times Square, Penn Station and Astor Place at some point, those aren’t little-heard Beatles numbers being played - they’re from the new Oasis album. That’ll be why the lyrics don’t make much sense.
First thing this morning the band were due to meet the buskers and have a rehearsal, before sending them off to try and whip up enthusiasm on the thus-far fairly indifferent American streets. They might want to wear some body padding just in case any drunken Canadians are in the area.
