Under The Covers - Marie Douceur’s thunderous cover of “Paint It Black”
It’s not easy tackling The Rolling Stones. On their day, The Stones rock harder, and play harder, than anyone else on the planet. Mick ‘n’ Keef are the purveyors of the chunkiest pop’n'riff tunes ever made. A good Stones record should slide out of the speakers like a big hunk o’ granite, ready to annihilate everything in its path. So what happens when an unknown French girl gets her hands on one of these records? In the case of Marie Douceur, she takes out the pneumatic drill.
Her cover of Paint It Black (redubbed Marie colère) takes the sitar rocker and pummels it into the ground. So tough and funky is the sound that you wonder why this version isn’t known all over the planet. Of course, taking a cock-er-ney twang across the channel could be tricky, but Douceur’s voice is so appealing that you need to take a cold bath after the first listen.
