Robbie Williams’ albums used to pave roads
Ever spent entire afternoons daydreaming about walking all over Robbie Williams’ face? Whilst wearing football boots? With studs sharpened? And razors inserted into the sole? No? Ahem. Well, if you don’t like Robbie, then this story will make you laugh. Basically, there are so many unsold copies of his last album, Rudebox, that they are to be shipped to China to be used for paving a road. Sorta.
This plan was announced in the Guardian, and it will see the rubbish long-players crushed to become ingredients in the production of the country’s streetlights and the relaying of roads. EMI, needing to cut some spending, are rubbing their hands together like Scrooge and loving it. Released in 2006, Rudebox was seen as a radical departure for Williams, who signed an £80 million deal with EMI in 2002… and now they want their pound of flesh.
In an announcement yesterday (January 15th), the record label’s new owners Terra Firma said big advances were one of the main reasons that EMI had plummeted into financial difficulties. Terra Firma’s boss Guy Hands, who has confirmed that up to 2,000 staff will lose their jobs at the label, said EMI would have to adapt because it was “struggling to respond to the challenges posed by a digital environment”. In light of Mr Hands’ plans, Williams is understood to be withholding his new album until its financial future is proven. Let’s hope it never sees the light of day. Ever.
