sircliff Sir Cliff Richard enters digital download market, confuses GrannyIt’s not Cliff Richard week, folks - honest. But following his stint as yesterday’s Taxicab Classic comes the news that Sir Cliff (or, more likely, some savvy folk at his record company, EMI) have come up with a rather clever stunt to encourage his - how shall we put this - mature fanbase to download his new album, which is rather ickily titled “Love, The Album”.
This is how it works. Ahead of the album release on 12th November, fans will be able to pre-order the album from the modestly-titled site www.lovecliffrichard.com. The more people who do so, the lower the price will go. The maximum they’ll pay is £7.99, the minimum £3.99, and everyone will pay the same final price once the hoo-ha’s over.

Sir Cliff, pictured above after having his hands glued to the ground by some hoodies, says: “As artists we face a stark choice. We either keep one step ahead of the technology which is changing our industry so radically – or we throw up our hands and quit. Personally I’m not for quitting!”
How many pre-orders are needed to reduce the price isn’t clear, but I’m sure it’s all very scientific and not at all made up depending on how successful this initiative is.
So could this be a new model for the legitimate download of albums? It whiffs of marketing stunt to me, but we shall see. At the very least it’ll be interesting to see whether Cliff’s congregation trust this internet thingy enough to send money through its tubes.
