Be Your Own Pet's "Becky" a sign of things not to come

When I heard that Be Your Own Pet were breaking up it struck me as a bit of a shame, if only because after their first blaze of publicity they seemed to be sloping off with a bit of a whimper. Who breaks up after managing to create some good old swearword-related controversy?
Then again the censorship of Get Awkward by a major label had to be a little disillusioning to a bunch of scamps who weren’t even old enough to drink when their first album was released.
Not sure if “Becky” will officially see the light of day as a single now, but it would be a shame if it didn’t act as some kind of calling card for singer Jemima Pearl at least. The song hints that the band were embarking on a more mature approach to songwriting, if not lyricism (“Now I’m going to juvie for teenage homicide” implies they believe the severity of punishments to be related to the age of the murder victim).
Which is not to say the song isn’t still a youthful, snotty, catchy joy to behold. Check it out after the jump, and cross your fingers that they don’t all end up driving cabs.
