Pop Hell: Peter Kay as Geraldine McQueen
I didn’t catch Peter Kay’s extended X-Factor parody Britain’s Got The Pop Factor. I’ve heard mixed reactions to it, so thought I’d check out one of the songs myself.
I’m not a massive fan of musical comedy, but even if I was, this would perplex me. I’m watching “Winners Song” entirely out of context of course, but surely it’s supposed to be a *bit* funny?
If you missed it too, see it after the jump.
The fact it’s co-written with Gary Barlow, though, alongside the fact it’s been released as a single through Polydor, illustrates that this is a serious attempt at a number one single.
So what you’re left with, basically, is Peter Kay living out his (female) pop star fantasies and inflicting it on the rest of us. I think we’d rather he just went up and told some jokes, wouldn’t we?

I’d rather listen to this than the 99% of rubbish that comes out of the X-Factor machine.
Look forward to it making a mockery of the chart and it getting to number 1.
I guess the point is that it’s possible to approach this with tongue firmly in cheek, and still end up with a song that sounds just like any that X-factor winners produce. If/when it gets to number one, it’ll just prove what a joke the singles charts are.
@Geat: Yeah, I suppose that is the point. I just question whether it’s something we needed hammering home in this manner - surely we all knew both those things already?
You really need to have seen the whole show to get it. imo, one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.
It also helps if you’ve watched x factor in the past, as a lot if the jokes would only be understood If you’ve watched the real shows.
And the Irony of a spoof single, played straight, beating a genuine winners effort, is comedic farce at it’s best, imo.
Sorry, don’t seem to have seen the same programmes as Mike.
Am an absolute Pete Kay fan having enjoyed all his stand up shows, Phoenix nights, That Peter Kay Thing and Comic Relief appearances. However, I thought the show was rubbish and if it’s the best thing PK can come up with after 4 years away from the small screen he has either lost the comediy brilliance that he once had or the success of Phoenix Nights was down to his co-writers.
Was really looking forward this and was hugely disappointed.
I caught Geraldine’s song on one of the music channels and i thought it sounded good. Loads better than that manufactured Scottish lad Leon Jackson and that crap song which is currently number 1 by Pink.
