Sean Kingston’s 2007 highlight? Selling bajillions of “Beautiful Girls” ringtones
You know that Sean Kingston, right? You know, the big lad who nicked “Stand By Me” and turned it into that ubiquitous “Beautiful Girls” song? God he depressed me this morning. Not like that. We’re not that close yet.
No, the cause of my disappointment was seeing him on E4 being interviewed by that Nick Grimshaw guy. Grimshaw asked him what the highlight of his 2007 was, right, and rather than say “Well, Grimshaw, having a huge number one single was quite nice”, he started banging on about how many ringtones he’s flogged. Like, seven million or something apparently.
Now I know that in these changing times the record industry is making money from new “revenue streams”, etc… But can we please pretend for just a little bit longer that ringtones are not such a big source of moolah? And can pop stars please not reference them in interviews? It’s icky. It’s a bit like boasting about how many keyrings or poseable dolls or packets of cereal your image has sold. OK, it’s not really like that, because ringtones count towards chart placings and all that - BUT IT STILL FEELS WRONG.
And that’s all I can be bothered saying about that at the moment.
