Stevie Wonder’s special guest: Hull City’s George Boateng

Stevie the Wonder has started his eagerly-awaited European tour (for which, btw, I will gladly accept press passes), with BBC Entertainment highly impressed by his opening show at Birmingham’s National Indoor Arena.
However, I couldn’t help but be perplexed to read of the guest appearance by Hull City footballer George Boateng…
From the Beeb:
“Then things took a turn for the bizarre with an appearance by Hull City footballer George Boateng.
He presented Wonder with a statue of Arthur Wharton, the UK’s first black professional footballer, and in return the singer added his voice to the campaign for Wharton to be more widely recognised.”
No disrespect to George - Hull are in the Premiership, if only for one season - but it’s hard to believe the ex-Middlesbrough midfielder was the most prominent black player they could get to go onstage with Stevie Wonder. And had Stevie heard of this Wharton chap - let alone Boateng - before this week? How odd.

I was at the gig - and his appearence confused the hell out of me and my girlfriend.
Apparently GB is the patron of a foundation related to Arthur Wharton (this was shoddily explained by another guest onstage).
I’m now waiting for Garth Crooks to come onstage with Metallica at the O2 next Monday…………
