SecondFest in association with The Guardian and Intel - the music festival for people who fear people

Yesterday my colleagues at Techscape reported on SecondFest, the music festival being put on by virtual world Second Life in association with The Guardian and Intel. Performers at SecondFest include Pet Shop Boys, Simian Mobile Disco, Digitalism and The Knife.

Now, I just about get the idea of Second Life. Basically - and I think I've got this right - you sign up to this website, right, and then you enter its virtualness, create a little cartoon version of yourself, run about a bit, interact with other folk doing the same thing, become more and more addicted to the whole thing, forgo having any semblance of a real life, spend real money on things that don't actually exist, sell a kidney to keep your compulsion going, and then wave goodbye to your wife and kids.

So that's clear. What I'm not so sure about is how a music festival works in this virtual world.

This site says that SecondFest will feature live music from offline and online performers, for instance. So - excuse my duh-brain here - if it's an online festival, how does it feature offline live music? Enlightened individuals would probably suggest I go and read all about it at The Guardian's site dedicated to the whole thing, but frankly someone's just made some toast here in the office and the smell has reminded me that I'm really hungry, and I can't understand stuff when I'm hungry.

I do like how new media-tastic The Guardian is these days though. They even have - oh yes - a SecondFest survival guide, which is less about packing your wellies and more about avoiding internet cliches when you meet new virtual contacts (and various other things I can't quite get my head around right now).

All of which is pretty cool if you like your music but can't be bothered going to real festivals and interacting with real people. And real people can be a hassle, with their voices and hair and breasts and stuff. Anyway, you have until next Friday, the 29th June, to decide whether it's worth investigating. Might be worth it just for The Knife. Wonder if you can virtually crowd surf...
