Festivals round-up: Wickerman review, arrests at Global Gathering, Lovebox Weekender gets thumbs-up

proclaimers.gif- Skiddle.com has a comprehensive review of events at the Wickerman festival where, you'll be pleased to hear, the food wasn't "dog shit on a plate". The Proclaimers must have been relieved

- The Secret Garden Party, whose website so warmed my cockles recently, struck a writer at The Telegraph as an excuse for adults to behave like kids. Like most festivals, then?

- Some people were arrested for drugs offences at Global Gathering. The world continues to turn

- The usually sniffy Drowned In Sound very much enjoyed Lovebox Weekender

- The BBC website has a focus on the up-and-coming young folk acts who performed at Cambridge Folk Festival at the weekend

This weekend's festival news update

Fingers are crossed all over the country that the evil weather will quieten down in the next few days to allow this weekend’s festival brood to go on unscathed. We’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, here’s a round up of the latest news on what to expect.

- Global Gathering will defy the weather to stay on this weekend, says the NME. All hail Long Marston Airfield’s drainage system, apparently the reason for the braving of the elements. Basement Jaxx and Faithless will probably not be bothered about the availability of hot showers what with their luxury tour buses, but the punters will be chuffed to bits.

Bad weather won't stop Global Gathering

globalgatheringweather.jpgGlobal Gathering, which is taking place at Long Marston Airfield, nr. Stratford on Avon, Warwickshire on Friday 27th and Saturday 28th July (basically, that means it's on this weekend) have issued a statement regarding the recent inclement weather and flooding, saying that the event will definitely go ahead.

Although nearby Stratford-on-Avon has been flooded, Long Marston Airfield - which is said to have "quality drainage systems" - is around five miles from the town and has been unaffected by the floods. As of today, all transport (road and rail) links are completely clear, and the emergency services don't foresee any problems with covering the event. The festival organisers sensibly advise ticket holders to come equipped for all weather conditions. The campsite - which also has good drainage - is equipped with hot showers and full amenities such as provision shops and bars, and the organisers are confident of being able to host a safe, well managed event.

Global Gathering to gather the cream of the dance world

gathering.jpgBasement Jaxx and Faithless will headline Global Gathering, the world’s biggest dance festival, joining a line-up that features some of the greatest DJs on the planet. 50,000 people are expected to congregate at the Long Marston Airfield on the 27th and 28th July to soak up the incredible atmosphere created by the likes of Paul van Dyk, Carl Cox, Erick Morillo and Armin Van Buuren, who will deliver sets from the 16 state-of-the-art sound systems.

The festival’s reputation has been built on its commitment to quality and each year the organisers outdo themselves. The bill sees the return of firm faves Paul Oakenfold, Sasha, Ferry Corsten, Roger Sanchez and 2ManyDJs, who are guaranteed to roadblock their arenas. And that's only the tip of the iceberg...

Experiential marketing is after your festival dollars (along with O2, Strongbow, Ray-Ban, Fender...)

o2.gifFestival time brings the opportunity for lots of fun for girls and boys of all ages. It also allows firms to launch a plethora of marketing onslaughts which, when you read the details of them, leave you feeling slightly less warm and fuzzy about the festival season. But would these events attract as many amazing acts without such heavy investment from companies?

O2 Wireless takes place this weekend in London and Leeds. The fact that I've been able to name the festival without using the word "festival", and through the use of just a brand name, seems indicative of the impact of corporate sponsorship on live music in the twenty-first century. And you can be assured the input from O2 will not end once you walk through the gate, either.
