myhab: For a festival experience free of camping disasters

You don't need to have been paying too much attention to the festival scene over the last few years to have noticed that, as idyllic as the picture in your head may have been when you booked your tickets, things can sometimes go a little bit wrong. If it's not tents being submerged in mud and water, it's the apparently insurmountable variety of problems associated with outdoor lavatoriums.

Well, consider such problems behind you, as long as you don't mind shelling out. Basically, myhab is a shelter made of recycled plastic and waterproof cardboard. Fear not, the cardboard is all inside the myhab, and having checked it out myself at the product launch the other night, I can confirm that this habitat is extremely durable.

Croissant Neuf Summer Party 2008

CNSP nighttime.jpgHave you developed a social conscience? Worried about your Carbon footprint? Not sure how to do your bit whilst still having a ruddy good time? Then worry no more, because those lovely people who brought you the Croissant Neuf Summer Party 2007 are coming back for more.

This eco-friendly festival features entirely solar powered stages and showers, organic food stands and more family fun than you could shake a brightly coloured stick at. Plus, with a sports day, poetry slam, lantern procession and masquerade ball there'll be plenty to keep even the most absent of minds occupied.

Continue after the jump for this week's winning lottery numbers...

The Maccabees, Foals, The Rascals among acts at 2008's Underage Festival line-up

underage.gifAs if having all their hair and no mortgages to fret over wasn't enough for the youth, they now have their own burgeoning underage gig scene. The daddy of the underage scene is, naturally enough, the Underage Festival, which is just for those not yet legally old enough to obliterate their livers with alcohol.

The Underage Festival's first outing, in 2007, was a huge success. I'm told. I wasn't there, obviously, because I was born before 2005. This year they have what looks to be an even better line-up. Click over for a frankly overwhelming list of impressive acts set to perform.

Wu-Tang head honcho, the RZA, to play Futuresonic

RZA.jpgThere's no denying the importance of Wu-Tang Clan. In my eyes, they're as important as Nirvana or Radiohead are in their respective fields. The mastermind behind the Wu is probably the greatest living hip-hop producer, the RZA - who just happens to be headlining Manchester's Futuresonic festival. Futuresonic's hip-hop showcase also features electro-hop producer Flying Lotus and Rustie, which means a killer night out for all beat-fiends.

Rufus Wainwright and Guillemots added to Hop Farm Festival bill

56301312_a936c327e4.gifHmm, I'm pretty sure last time we talked about the Hop Farm Festival, Vince Power's sponsorship-free shindig, it was called "Back To Basics". Looks like that bit's been dropped now, and it is officially called the Hop Farm Festival. So that's that cleared up.

Anyway, the REAL news is that the bill is taking shape quite nicely. Previously announced headliner Neil Young you probably already knew about, and in addition to him you can expect to enjoy the sounds of: Primal Scream, Supergrass, My Morning Jacket, Guillemots and Rufus Wainwright.

Fielding in a Field - Festival Fun with The Mighty Boosh

Hats off to Noel Fielding, Julian Barratt and everyone at Mighty Boosh Marketing HQ. Fans of the once-cult comedy creation, The Mighty Boosh, may be excited by the news that 2008 will see the first ever Boosh-backed festival. And with a celebrity-friend checklist the length of an orang-utan's arm, frankly, who can blame them?

After this year's mass of publicity and gargantuan growth of fan-base, the Booshers have already added 15 extra dates to their tour of over 40 shows later this year. Now, with an NME award for Best TV Show tucked under their utilitarian-beige and sequinned belts, Barratt and Fielding plan to take the next logical step with a 30,000 capacity open air event, bringing together their music and comedy friends for a day of dressing up in the country.

Details after the click...

Rock en Seine tickets on sale - Amy Winehouse, R.E.M and more in attendance

michael_stipe_r.e.m.gifIf you're one of those moaning Michaels who thinks Jay-Z doesn't belong at Glastonbury, or you just don't fancy bathing in mud and faeces this summer, you might want to consider checking out France's Rock en Seine festival.

It takes place over two days on 28th & 29th August, and is rather conveniently placed just outside Paris. Two-day tickets are a scandalously reasonable 75 euros - especially when you see who's performing...

Dispatches From Beardsville - Calexico to play only UK date at End of the Road

calexico_b.jpg

Country? Folk? Tex-Mex? Psychedelic Jazz? Whatever Calexico are, they're bloody great when on form. Having caught them live a few times, I'm happy to say that they're usually mindblowing. So with that, the group have announced their only UK date, which will take place at the forthcoming End Of The Road festival.

Enter Shikari to play MySpace Secret Show at Camden Crawl

enter_shikari_myspace.gifIf you were lucky enough to get your hands on a ticket for this weekend's Camden Crawl, here's a chance for you to try and nab a spot at a special secret performance organised by MySpace.

Noisy hooded scamps Enter Shikari will be playing this Friday, 18th April, at a secret location somewhere in the Camden vicinity. I'm assuming the location will be revealed to ticketholders at some point, or the attendance figure may be somewhat disappointing. Check out how to gain entry after the you-know-what...

Hadouken! think Glasto might just be a bit middle class

Hadouken-group.jpgHadouken! are a band that look like they've been stripped naked, covered in glue and dragged through a jumble sale. Yes. They're appallingly dressed humans. Not only that, they've got a theory about the muted response to Glastonbury ticket sales.

Talking to Gigwise, they reckon that Glasto has lost its buzz because of the people who attend, rather than the ticket price, temperamental weather and botchulism burgers. Frontman James Smith sez: "Glastonbury is a bit of a middle class schmooze with Kate Moss look-alikes trying to look their best in Ugg Boots." Although, with one eye on the career, he added; "It is the king of festivals, so if we were to do it, that would be fantastic."

Glastonbury tickets go on sale, people buy them

I believe it's customary when Glastonbury tickets go on sale for music-related websites to report the fact. Therefore I am pleased to be able to tell you that, yes, tickets for Glastonbury went on sale yesterday and yes, people are buying them, and yes, some people are annoyed with the onine booking system.

You may want to bookmark this story and read it again the next time Glastonbury tickets go on sale. I'll just be cutting and pasting it anyway.

Underage Festival bags Gallows, Horrors, Foals and more

The Underage Festival. What a good idea that is. No, seriously. I know that I can be sarcastic sometimes, but hell, if you're 14 and you're sick of kicking out the jams in yer room or being chucked out of pubs, this is a godsend. So, with that, if you're 14 - 18 years old, who can you watch?

Well, Gallows have been chosen to headline this year's festival, which takes place in Victoria Park, east London on the 8th August. There are loads of other bands on too, some of 'em pretty big names... Highlights including The Horrors, Sons and Daughters and the very fashionable Foals. Who else is on? Read over for a long list of bandnames.

Sex Pistols to play intimate gig before Isle Of Wight Festival

Have you noticed that most articles on The Sex Pistols feature a snap of the band in their '70s pomp? That's because these days, they look like a ridiculous troupe of sulky pantomime dames. So with that, we're not bucking any trends and giving you a vintage snapshot.

So why this talk of The Sex Pistols? Well, the punks will play a warm-up show for their Isle Of Wight Festival show in Birmingham this summer, it has been confirmed. The re-reformed snot projectors are to play a tiny gig (for an act of their size at least) at the Birmingham Academy on June 11, performing in the city for the first time in over 30 years.

Dispatches From Beardsville: loads more added to Green Man Festival bill

Whether you're in the camp that says 'Green Man is Good! Folk is not a four-letter word!' or 'Green Man. It's getting a bit busy for my liking...', there's no hiding from the fact that it's probably the most mellow festival on the circuit and well worth spending some time at. Now, we've already told you about some of the acts that are on the bill (click here) but that's not to say there's no mo' adding to be done. Hell no. There's another 20 bands just been popped on the bills. Yessir!

Bjork, Kate Nash and Franz Ferdinand to be found at Germany's Melt festival

That's bloody it. I'm emigrating. Or at least maybe possibly thinking of perhaps touring European Festivals this summer.

The other week I took a look at Serbia's Exit festival, which offers hard partying in an ancient castle at bargain prices. Well, if you can't make that one you might want to consider Germany's Melt festival. As seems to be the way these days with Euro-fests, it offers a terrific bill at very reasonable prices.

Melt takes place in Ferropolis between 18th and 20th July - originally conceived as a two-day festival, the third day apparently had to be added due to overwhelming demand.

More details after the jumpitude.

Neil Young to headline Vince Power's "Back To Basics" festival

220406Neil_Young.jpgHave you heard of Vince Power? Well, Vince is one of the UK's biggest live music promoters and he's set to return to the festival game this year with the first major non branded 'back to basics' event of its kind.

This festival looks to be pretty good as it's based at the Hop Farm at the Kentish Oast Village in Paddock Wood, Tonbridge and is basically is devoid of any sponsorship. A Day at the Hop Farm will also be without any VIP areas, with the aim of being a festival for festivalgoers, returning live music to its roots, where you turn up with your ticket and enjoy the same experience as every other ticket holder! So who is on?

Bjork to play Wild In The Country at Knebworth

I get lots of info on Bjork as her record label like me. That's fine by me as I really like Bjork, and getting these little bits of news make me feel really rather important. So what have they told me? Well, Bjork's been confirmed to headline the second one-day Wild In The Country event at Knebworth Park this Summer.

The China-bothering popster will top the bill at the shindig which takes place on Saturday July 5 at the renowned heritage park in Hertfordshire. This will be Bjork's ONLY UK festival appearance in 2008. There will be six arenas (that means stages and tents to you and me) at the event, full to bursting with dance and electronic acts. Start saving up for your MDMA-related pick-me-ups now.

Not only can you gurn like your life depends on it, but the site will also feature attractions including an enchanted wood and a Victorian fun fair. Seriously. You can find more information by clicking on the following link... this link here. Confirmed DJs and bands can be found overleaf.

Serbia's Exit festival: where you can see Sex Pistols and Gogol Bordello rock an ancient fortress

They do things differently on the continent, don't they? For one thing, they hold awards ceremonies in "military clubs". And when it comes to festivals, we're talking the ancient Petrovaradin Fortress. For that is where Serbia's already legendary Exit Festival takes place in a town called Novi Sad, which overlooks the River Danube.

Apparently 10,000 British folk made it down to south-east Europe for last year's event, which included performances from The Prodigy, Beastie Boys, Snoop Dogg and Richie Hawtin among many others. Peter Hook put it quite well when asked about Exit: "I've never seen a better way to ruin an 18th Century fortress. F*ck the past, here's to the future!"

Dispatches From Beardsville: Leonard Cohen to hit the road with huge tour of the world

Folk legend Leonard Cohen has been off the road for a fair while now, so to compensate his fans he's going on a monster tour of just about every country in the entire world to play hits old and new. The mammoth tour kicks off on the 6th of May and ends in Vienna in August. Along the way he'll stop at Glastonbury, The Big Chill and some places I've never even heard of in the Eastern Bloc. Exciting stuff! Read over for a very long list of tour dates!

Neil Young added to Roskilde bill

Neil Young shows sell out fast. Worse still, they ALWAYS cost an arm and a leg. So, how do you go about watching the great man? Well, one answer is to catch him at a festival, which is handy as Young has been added to this year's Roskilde Festival bill.

Young last played the Danish festival in 2000 and returns to plug his latest LP 'Chrome Dreams'. On the bill, Young will be playing with Radiohead and My Bloody Valentine. Not bad eh? The festival is hosted near Copenhagen and takes place from July 3 - 6. More news, info and ticket details can be found at www.roskilde-festival.dk. Young kicked off his UK leg last night in Edinburgh and he'll round-up these shores with dates at the Hammersmith Apollo ( March 5/6/8/9/11/14/15) and Manchester Apollo (11/12). Click over to see a video of Neil in action. [via Uncut]

Finally, a sponsor for the Isle of Wight Festival is announced

iggy.gifWell, the waiting is over. For months now, seemingly the only thing discussed in music forums across swathes of the internet has been one question: Just who is going to sponsor the Isle Of Wight Festival, which runs from 13th - 15th June? To say the speculation has been feverish would frankly be something of an understatement. Fevers have nothing on this. NOTHING.

So it is with a fair amount of arousal that, only a day after the news was officially released, I am proud to announce that the sponsors of 2008's Isle Of Wight festival will be... BT!

!

!!!

Congratulations to all involved. If you are in possession of tickets to the festival, or plan to soon acquire them, you should be aware that your experience will now be taking place at the Isle of Wight Festival In Association With BT. But if you think that's going to affect the fun you'll have, go and wash your stupid little brain out, you.

Thom Yorke slags Glastonbury for not being green enough

Thom.Yorke---.jpgFinally! Even though I get sick to my teeth, sick in my teeth and all over someone else's teeth at rock stars preaching about [insert good cause here], I'm rather glad that Thom Yorke (he's in Radiohead, y'know?) has spoken up about Glastonbury and its clearly un-green ways.

Yorke's revealed that Radiohead didn’t play Glastonbury this year because of the lack of a local transport infrastructure around the festival site. He announced the decision while promoting the Big Ask Europe campaign in Brussels yesterday. He explained: “One of the conditions of the band carrying on touring is that we do everything we can to minimise our impact on the environment."

blenheim.gifOr, if you're reading this on the 28th February - TOMORROW. First there's the Oxfordshire leg, which will take place in the salubrious setting of Blenheim Palace (left), don'tcha know. Apparently this is the first time a contemporary music festival's been held in these esteemed grounds, so BE GRATEFUL.

Then you have the North Wales leg, held between 4th and 6th July in Abersoch, which is on the coast and will therefore allow you to live like that beach bum you always wanted to be, for a few days at least.

Mercury Rev to play only UK date at End Of The Road

When I think of Mercury Rev, I always think of the word "ethereal". That and, "hasn't the lead singer got a funny voice". Still, they're a great little group and they're gearing up for an appearance at the End Of The Road festival in Dorset.

Now, I've been to this festival and it's very pleasant indeed. There are peacocks roaming around and the bands always end up drinking with the crowd... it's that kinda place. In the past, the event has hosted Super Furry Animals, Yo La Tengo, Richard Hawley and Ryan Adams, will take place on September 12, 13 and 14 at the beautiful Larmer Tree Gardens.

Glastonbury festival reveals ticket details for 2008 party

Via their offical sponsor Q Magazine (officially the squarest magazine in the entire world), tix will be upfergrabs on Sunday 6th April, with the time still to be confirmed (you'd imagine it's the usual 9am stampede though). Anyone wanting a ticket will have to pre-register their details with a photograph during February at Glastonbury's official website, to ensure that successful buyers aren't able to sell their tickets on.

Glastonbury '08 will take place from Friday 27th to Sunday 29th June, with 132,500 weekend tickets available, as well as 5,000 Sunday-only tickets for local-types. Why should you go? SĆ”n Festival, Cardiff – New autumn festival

Let’s be honest - when you think festival, you think summer. But this weekend, thanks to Huw Stephens (of Radio 1 and Radio Wales fame), Cardiff will be playing host to the brand new SĆ”n festival, despite a distinct absence of summer-ness.

Featuring over 70 artists playing across various venues, including Clwb Ifor Bach and The Point, SĆ”n (Welsh for “sound”) will bring music, art and cinema together (but mostly music). Using his BBC contacts, Huw’s big weekend will play witness to DJ sets from fellow R1 colleagues Annie Mac, Steve Lamacq and the Vinyl Vendettas (Bethan Elfyn) while acts like The Cribs, I Was A Cub Scout, Victorian English Gentleman’s Club and The Duke Spirit will play alongside a raft of Welsh bands from the local scene.

Read on for Huw’s views...
