Kylie to tour... and there are loads of UK dates

(Brave) Kylie has announced details of her new live tour, and rather excitedly for UK Kyliefans, she's revealed that she plans to perform 20 arena dates in the UK alone. The KylieX2008 tour kicks off in Paris on May 6th, the day after her new single "In My Arms" is released, and is reportedly set to cost £10 million to stage. The press statement claims it will be the pop princess' "greatest tour ever". Quite a claim, eh?

Coldplay to give away music, performances in exchange for your love

chris_martin_coldplay.gifClearly SHAKEN by the recent finding that they're the dullest band on the planet, Coldplay are launching an all-out offensive aimed at winning/retaining the love of you, the illegally downloading record-buying public.

Good news for anyone who actually likes scrawly-handed Martin and his mates, then. They'll be playing a free show at Brixton Academy on 16th June, and another at Madison Square Garden on 23rd June. If you head over to Coldplay.com now-ish you should be able to find details of how to obtain tickets.

And that's not all.

New Shortwave Set single - 'No Social' - video here

Do you like quirky pop with a brain? Of course, I'm not talking about pop that you get in a can... a brain in some Tizer would just ming. Nope, I'm talking about good ol' pop music with sass and sleaze. Then you probably like the Shortwave Set. If you don't really know, then here's your chance to find out. They've got a new single coming out called 'No Social' and you can watch the exclusive video here... if you click over the jump.

The Shortwave Set are also playing the following some live dates, which I advise you catch 'em at. They are: 3 May - London - Clash Club at 93 Feet East, 17 May - Brighton - The Great Escape, 31May - Leeds - Wax:On @ Lotherton Hall

The Maccabees, Foals, The Rascals among acts at 2008's Underage Festival line-up

underage.gifAs if having all their hair and no mortgages to fret over wasn't enough for the youth, they now have their own burgeoning underage gig scene. The daddy of the underage scene is, naturally enough, the Underage Festival, which is just for those not yet legally old enough to obliterate their livers with alcohol.

The Underage Festival's first outing, in 2007, was a huge success. I'm told. I wasn't there, obviously, because I was born before 2005. This year they have what looks to be an even better line-up. Click over for a frankly overwhelming list of impressive acts set to perform.

T4 On The Beach acts announced. The good: Robyn. The bad: Scouting For Girls

Further proof that the spheres of pop and "alternative" music are merging together in some kind of musical Venn diagram comes with the announcement of the line-up for this year's T4 On The Beach.

This year's event will take place in Weston-super-Mare on 20th July, and will feature performances from - on pop's good side - Robyn, The Feeling and Lightspeed Champion. Representing the side of evil guitar pop, we have two of the most irritating acts out there today, The Hoosiers and Scouting For Girls.

Rufus Wainwright and Guillemots added to Hop Farm Festival bill

56301312_a936c327e4.gifHmm, I'm pretty sure last time we talked about the Hop Farm Festival, Vince Power's sponsorship-free shindig, it was called "Back To Basics". Looks like that bit's been dropped now, and it is officially called the Hop Farm Festival. So that's that cleared up.

Anyway, the REAL news is that the bill is taking shape quite nicely. Previously announced headliner Neil Young you probably already knew about, and in addition to him you can expect to enjoy the sounds of: Primal Scream, Supergrass, My Morning Jacket, Guillemots and Rufus Wainwright.

Enter Shikari to play MySpace Secret Show at Camden Crawl

enter_shikari_myspace.gifIf you were lucky enough to get your hands on a ticket for this weekend's Camden Crawl, here's a chance for you to try and nab a spot at a special secret performance organised by MySpace.

Noisy hooded scamps Enter Shikari will be playing this Friday, 18th April, at a secret location somewhere in the Camden vicinity. I'm assuming the location will be revealed to ticketholders at some point, or the attendance figure may be somewhat disappointing. Check out how to gain entry after the you-know-what...

Bob Dylan to tour Europe... but not the UK?

bobdylan_in_a_hat.jpgI saw Bob Dylan a number of years ago and I have to say that I wasn't all that impressed. In fairness, my expectations were incredibly high after seeing him a couple of years before. Speaking to some hardened Dylanites, some of whom were following him around the world on his 'neverending tour', it seems that Mr Zimmerman can be hot and cold live, and I'd caught a 'cold' evening. Shame, as it was the middle of summer.

Some of those world travellers may be following him again soon, as Dylan has confirmed 29 European live dates which will start this May. Via his website www.bobdylan.com he's announced that he'll be visiting quite a few festivals, and a whopping eleven gigs in Spain! There's no word on any UK dates as yet, but he's playing so many gigs that, chances are, you'll be able to catch him wherever you decide to go for your holidays this summer. The full confirmed Bob Dylan European tour dates are over the jump.

The Specials to reform?

thespecials.jpgGet your best skanking gear out of the loft and dust down yer bovver boots because The Specials are definitely reforming. Well, I say definitely... what I mean is they've hinted at the fact that they might reform and like all the other times they've hinted, it probably won't happen. Essentially the same thing though, I'm sure you'll agree.

Singer Terry Hall said the band had been inspired to perform together again by recent reunions of bands such as the Pixies. Hall commented: "Because I saw Patti Smith do Horses, and I saw the Pixies reforming...you do it with dignity or don't do it at all. We need to spend the summer rehearsing, I think it's taken me 30 years to realise we could do it really well."

Teenager Cancer Trust DVDs available - Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher, Kasabian... and more!

welllergallagher.jpg

So often, charity and music collide to make a racket so horrendous that you actually wish ill on the needy. However, sometimes charity events get it completely right. One such event was the Teenage Cancer Trust who threw a big ol' event with some major A-listers. Missed it? Don't worry, there's a DVD to help you catch up. The DVD features a selection of live exclusive performances from their Albert Hall Shows in 2006 & 2007 from artists like The Who, Noel Gallagher, Paul Weller, The Cure, Kasabian, Kaiser Chiefs, Razorlight, Bloc Party and Judas Priest. Not a bad list eh?

The DVD is jam-packed with performances that capture the spirit of this unique event, including one-off collaborations between Noel Gallagher and Paul Weller, and Razorlight and The Who's Roger Daltrey. The DVD will be available from the Teenage Cancer Trust website (www.teenagecancertrust.org) immediately at a special preview price. It then goes on general sale from 14 April '08. All profits from the sale of the DVD will go to Teenage Cancer Trust, helping them to continue to build specialist teenage cancer units within the NHS for young people with cancer. If that's not enough, I've got some clips for you over the jump.

Sex Pistols to play intimate gig before Isle Of Wight Festival

Have you noticed that most articles on The Sex Pistols feature a snap of the band in their '70s pomp? That's because these days, they look like a ridiculous troupe of sulky pantomime dames. So with that, we're not bucking any trends and giving you a vintage snapshot.

So why this talk of The Sex Pistols? Well, the punks will play a warm-up show for their Isle Of Wight Festival show in Birmingham this summer, it has been confirmed. The re-reformed snot projectors are to play a tiny gig (for an act of their size at least) at the Birmingham Academy on June 11, performing in the city for the first time in over 30 years.

Free man Nelson Mandela invites you to his birthday party in Hyde Park in aid of 46664

Nelson Mandela, who is free, is inviting you to his 90th birthday in London's Hyde Park. That's nice, innit? Not so nice is that you'll need to pay. But niceness wins 2-1 against not-niceness in this little battle, because the shindig is being thrown in conjunction with 46664, a charity which aims to raise awareness and funds in the fight against the global HIV/AIDS pandemic. It doesn't get much nicer than that.

If I get to see my 90th birthday I just hope my brain is in good enough nick to recognise the fact. Nelson Mandela - a free man for twenty years now - is throwing a flipping concert for thousands of folk, gawd bless 'im. He says:

"London wants to celebrate my birthday and I said I would go if they would raise funds for our charities. So, we have a bargain - I am going to London and they there will host a concert in Hyde Park, which will raise awareness of our continuing work and much needed funds."

Can You Gig It?: Christopher D Ashley/Joe Driscoll @ The Big Chill House, King's Cross, London

Last night I went to The Rage Sessions, which is the new monthly event catering to members of The Rage, a new gig-going community. Originally Little Lost David was slated to appear, but he went and lost his little voice, so that put paid to that. The organisers got Joe Driscoll in to replace him.

This Joe chap is one of those there one man bands, and very cleverly uses live looping alongside a guitar to create the sound of all those other instruments people usually use. Now, I am very easily impressed by gimmicks such as this.

Dispatches From Beardsville: Leonard Cohen to hit the road with huge tour of the world

Folk legend Leonard Cohen has been off the road for a fair while now, so to compensate his fans he's going on a monster tour of just about every country in the entire world to play hits old and new. The mammoth tour kicks off on the 6th of May and ends in Vienna in August. Along the way he'll stop at Glastonbury, The Big Chill and some places I've never even heard of in the Eastern Bloc. Exciting stuff! Read over for a very long list of tour dates!

Radiohead to play free gig at BBC Radio Theatre

Radiohead are a band who like doing things for free. They gave their album away for nothing, and now they're gonna play a free gig too. How kind! However, this free gig won't be a simple 'just turn up and watch 'em in a big field' affair. No. That's way too easy. Thom and Co are to play a free concert for BBC Radio 2 this April.

The gig is going to take place at the BBC's Radio Theatre, situated in central London's Broadcasting House. If you want to see them pelt instruments in the name of music, well, the gig is only for fans who apply for, and win, tickets. So how do you do it? Well, if you're related to a member of staff at the BBC, you can hope that they break this BBC Trust thing... failing that, it's time to get on the telephone and push a series of buttons in this special order: 08700 100 200. The gig takes place on April 1... hang on a minute... this ain't some kind of joke, is it? [via NME]

autoKratz to headline Club NME at London's Koko tonight

If you're a at a loose end tonight and happen to be in our country's capital you might want to call me! Please? I'm sorry for everything I said! head to Koko, where Club NME will feature a headlining set from autoKratz, purveyors of rather enjoyable bleepy bloopy electro-type stuff. Their music might not be a million miles from lots of other elecro around at the moment, but their live shows are supposed to be a-ma-z-ing or something.

No doubt they'll be banging out their new single, which appears to be the modern equivalent of a Double A-side and is called "Pardon Garcon/French Girls Play Guitar". You can hear both tracks at the autoKratz MySpace, and they'll be released on label-of-the-moment Kitsune on 7th April.

Never thought We Are Scientists would play Wembley Stadium? Check out Play.com Live

Tickets are still available for Play.com Live, which is taking place at Wembley Stadium on 15th / 16th March. The event has a bewilderingly diverse line-up of entertainment / acts on offer. Here is a list to boggle your brain:

Saturday: Elliot Minor, The Rumble Strips, Vincent Vincent and the Villains, Beth Rowley

Sunday: We Are Scientists, You Me At Six, Go:Audio, Saving Aimee

Both days: chance to play cackloads of video games from the likes of Sega, EA, Activision, Microsoft, THQ and Ubisoft.

And the whole thing will be hosted by the unlikely pairing of Gemma Atkinson and Iain Lee.

Er, something for everyone, then - although I suspect the presence of Gemma Atkinson and video games may lead to a teenage boy-heavy clientele. Anyway, tickets are only £6 for adults and £3 for kids, so it's pretty good value for money if you're in the area. More details / tickets can be found here.

"Grown-up gigging" pioneers All The Rage launch online community, monthly showcase

My eyes creak. My knees have gone grey. My bones smell of mothballs. OK, so it's not that bad (yet), but I am ageing. So are you, youngster. Oh sure, right now it's all neon hoodies and high-maintenance hairstyles, but just you wait. But hey, it's not all that bad.

Why, there are even folk out there who are creating gig-going experiences just for people unlucky enough to be outside the ABC1 demographic. You must have heard the buzz-phrase "gigging for grown-ups" by now? What? You were too busy going out and having a life? Well, that's just lovely for you.

All The Rage are the industry leaders in all this stuff, offering gigs for folk who would rather nibble a canape than swig lager from a plazzy glass. Hey, stop sniggering. They're a valuable market.

All The Rage have now launched an online music community called The Rage, allowing members special priviliges like discounted gig tickets, access to members-only goodies on the website and - oh yes - a free CD. Remember those?

Yeasayer UK dates / single / video / kitchen sink

Over the page you will find the video for "Wait For The Summer" by Yeasayer, who are another of the current crop of hotly-tipped US bands. It is a lovely video with many interesting animations, and almost succeeds in distracting you from the fact that the song is somewhat disappointing, especially if you compare it to recent releases from the other new kids on the block, MGMT and Vampire Weekend. Supergrass - New single, new album, new tour dates, new video...

superdupergrass.jpgYou can't begrudge Supergrass their place in rock'n'roll. They're clearly a good bunch and they ain't afraid of some hard work. Where most Britpoppers just rolled over and died, Supergrass kept on with their keepin' on, and are having a well-deserved resurgence. So, with that, they're making themselves super busy with a new LP, new single and a big fat tour of the UK.

The band release new 45, 'Bad Blood' on March 17th on Parlophone (watch the video here), which is taken from the new LP, Diamond Hoo Ha, out March 24th. If the singles are anything to go by, then the long-player will be a return to form for Ver Grass. You should catch 'em live (where they're always at their best) at the following dates. March - 11th Edinburgh Liquid Rooms, 12th Liverpool Carling Academy, 13th Cambridge Junction, 4th London Roundhouse. April - 11th Birmingham Academy, 12th Glasgow ABC, 13th Northumbria University, 15th Notts Rock City, 16th Leeds Met, 17th Lincoln Engine Shed, 18th Manchester Academy, 20th Bristol Academy, 21st Norwich UEA, 22nd and 23rd London Astoria.

R.E.M. to tour UK with huge stadium dates

REM-comein.jpgWe thought they were dead and then we discovered that they weren't when we gave you R.E.M's newest video for 'Supernatural Superserious'. Well, they're clearly alive and kicking as they're about to hit the road in the UK. Of course, they're not street-sweeping, but rather, playing some massive gigs. Now, I'm not a fan of R.E.M. really, but seeing them a fews years back was one of the most mindlessly enjoyable gigs I've ever been to.

The group, will play summer shows around the UK to mark / promote new LP Accelerate. Stipe and co, who already confirmed a one-off at the Royal Albert Hall in April, have lined-up four stadium gigs. The tour kicks off in Manchester and also includes dates in Cardiff, Southampton and London. So where can we catch 'em? Read over...

Eels go on huge world tour and will almost certainly be playing in a town near you...

eels--.jpgI like The Eels. I think Mark Oliver Everett is one of the finest songwriters around. Mixing up olde time country stylings with ear-splitting white noise, thoughtful balladry and black humour, Eels essentially have it all (oh, they're pretty catchy too!). So, on the back of their dual release of a greatest hits and rarities comp, (Meet the Eels and Useless Trinkets, respectively), Everett and Co. are set to hit the road on a huge world tour.

The tour kicks off on Valentine's Day in their home state of Cali before dusting off the passports for a jaunt round the UK, then it's the mainland Europe leg, then, phew, it's back to the UK, then back to Europe, before finishing off in North America. Bloody hell. That looks like hard work. Anyway, if you wanna know where they'll be playing, read over.

Nick Cave to tour his Bad Seeds in 2008

Many dismiss Nick Cave as gloomy and depressing. Well, I suppose he can be. However, you shouldn't write him off as he can be vicious, hilarious and fire 'n' brimstone if needs be, and boy, if you catch him live, your hair might stand on end for a whole month. With that comes the good news that Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds are to hit the road promoting the band's 14th LP Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!, which should hit the shelves on 3rd March.

Tour dates are Lisbon Colliseum (April 21), Porto Coliseum (22), San Sebastian Polideportivo (24), Barcelona Razzmatazz (25), Marseilles Docks Du Suds (26), Amsterdam Music Hall (28)

Free Gigs - The Vice Tour with Black Kids, Friendly Fires and Ipso Facto

Nobody gives you something for nothing. Nobody but the rather kind people promoting this year’s Vice Tour, that is.

Top retailer Topshop have teamed up with Vice to bring three hotly tipped bands to the streets of Glasgow, Manchester, London and Bristol for a four day freebie of shows. The line up includes NME’s latest favourites: Black Kids and Friendly Fires, both of which featured in the magazine’s New Noise 2008 list. Also playing will be Ipso Facto, melancholy synth lovers with roots in the Southend scene which so kindly brought us The Horrors.

If track records are what you go for you may be interested to know that last year‘s tour featured some of 2007’s great finds like the Foals. So if you want to be “scene” to have your finger on the pulse, you'll love this gig. If however, like me, you’re just a cheapo at heart, I’m sure you’ll agree the best part is it’s FREE! To register for tickets simply click here, pop in your details and Robert’s your uncle.

thom.gifThose in the know will have attended - or at least queued for - last night's secret Radiohead show at the Rough Trade East store off London's Brick Lane 93 Feet East.

Apparently some fans were queuing since 9am, which gives a lie to any lazy stereotypes about their fans being weakling student types - it was pretty nippy out there yesterday. Were you there? Supergrass return as the Diamond Hoo Ha Men, play annoyingly small London shows

It does annoy me when bands take on alter egos. OK, for secret gigs it's fair enough, but beyond that my weary brain kind of thinks "ugh, so I have to get my head around a whole new band that isn't even a whole new band?"

All of that goes out the window if said alter ego produces something worth listening to, mind. Fortunately that's the case with Supergrass's new single, which is called "Diamond Hoo Ha Man" and which they're promoting as the Diamond Hoo Ha Men. You may spot a connection there.

"Diamond Hoo Ha Man" sounds a bit like Queens Of The Stone Age covering Jet. Or, er, vice versa. I mean that in the best possible way, you understand. A couple of video teasers have been posted on El Tube, but I'd suggest you head over to their MySpace to give the full track a listen.

Amy Winehouse gives stunning performance, then quits touring

winehouse%26hubby.gifInteresting review of La Wino's recent Brighton gig on the Channel 4 Music Blog yesterday. By their account she was outstanding, and any walk-offs and the like were part of the show - something the papers conveniently ignored in their reports.

Also, the writer gets sentence of the year from me, after describing one particular vocal effect as something that:

...hit us squarely between the eyes then simultaneously expanded into our chest and juddered down our spine, before fizzing into our kneecaps and turning whatever substance that keeps our legs upright into the consistency of chocolate mouse.

And breeeathe.

Ticketmaster incurs the wrath of blogging Morrissey fans, steels itself for daffodil attack

I mentioned earlier the heartbreak caused by Morrissey's January gigs apparently selling out online in a nanosecond. Kat from Tech Digest was so outraged she did what any self-respecting nerdlinger would do - she cried and drowned her sorrows with weak lemon squash took to her blogging platform! Read her article, which appeared on Tech Digest earlier today, below. For a Mozza fan, it's pretty rational...

kat-TD-pic.jpgKatherine Hannaford writes:

Excuse me for five minutes whilst I vent and rant about how angry I am with Ticketmaster and other online ticket-sellers. You may be aware that this morning, tickets for six London Morrissey gigs went on sale at 9am. Or you will be, when tonight's papers come out proclaiming the gigs as being the fastest-selling concerts since the guitar was invented.

Like all die-hard Morrissey fans, I logged on at 9am sharp to buy two tickets to just one of the gigs. I was actually using my HTC Touch on the bus, navigating through the pages with GPRS, which was actually behaving itself for once. Not only that, but I had someone else attempting to buy tickets for me as well, on a computer at home. By 9:04am however, we discovered that our attempts to see the quiff-tastic Mozfather were in vain, as all the tickets were sold out.

Hang on - a 3,300 capacity venue, sold out on all six nights, within minutes of the tickets going on sale? It reeked of ticket tout exploitation, and has angered me to the point where I'm urging Ticketmaster and the like to implement new measures to block touts from ruining actual fans' chances of purchasing tickets. For the love of Morrissey and all good music!

Morrissey Roundhouse tickets still available shocker!

My colleague Kat, who writes for the marvellous Tech Digest, came into work bereft this morning. You see, tickets for Morrisey's January London shows had apparently sold out online within ONE FRICKIN' MINUTE. Morrissey is to Kat what Santa Claus is to children. You should have seen her little face.

And yet, the photo accompanying this story has her grinning away like a loon. Why? Here's why! In a last-ditch attempt, she called up London's Roundhouse direct - and, to the astonishment of everyone here in the office, she got through to a lady who told her that tickets were still available for every single night of Mozza's Roundhouse residency. Imagine! Tickets are still sold over the phone! It looks like they're being released in a drip-drip fashion.

Go here to get the Camden Roundhouse number and you too might yet be lucky.
