Up-And-Coming Act - Foals
Good day to you pop-pickers, it’s time for another Up-And-Coming Act. This week my tip for the top is “math rock” foot-stompers, Foals, who hail from the educated vestibules of Oxford. Set to support on tour with Bloc Party, Foals should be well received by ‘Party fans with their addictive electric loops and a sweatily energetic live performance. You may also recognise the Foals from such recent televisual performances as Later...With Jools Holland. New single “Balloons” is due for release on 10th December. Why not have a little listen here for your very own 2 minutes 59 of invigoration?
I will confess, I wasn’t immediately enamoured with the Foals. But after a couple of listens they really worm their way under your skin, into your bloodstream and take control of your pulse. The urgent, catchy twang of guitars and drum beats, combined with some mildly Robert Smith-ish vocals, is somehow irresistible (cue rafts of disagreeing comments) and you soon find yourself twitching around the living room in a bit of a trance.
Watching the Foals play Bristol's Thekla earlier this year, their live set kicked out even more energy in the flesh, literally dripping into the wriggling crowd. On a small stage, the rapturous twisting, flicking, rocking and flinging of various body parts left me astonished - if not only that the lads didn’t injure themselves. Now, with news that yesterday’s Carlisle show had to be cancelled due to an injured foot, I'm just impressed that they’ve lasted this long!
