Can You Gig It?: Chromeo / Man Like Me @ London King's Cross Scala, 28.11.07
Phil Martin is a young man who likes him some Chromeo. He went to - how you say - "peep" them last week, and this is what happened.
How did you rate the venue?
The Scala is pretty handy as a live music spot. They had all floors open so no overcrowding, and just enough room to whoop and throw your hands in the air. I did find a girl in the blokes’ loo at one point but it could have been worse. She could have been a bloke.
What were the crowd like?
Early twenties, arty, lot of Klaxons-esque attire, good male/female split. Once Chromeo came on (in fact once they brought their mannequin-limbed keyboards onstage) the crowd were completely captivated and the vibe was awesome.
Was the support act any good or did it send you to the bar?
Man Like Me - I’ve previously only seen one of their vids on the box and hated it because I thought it was a bit of a UKHH rip-off crossover. However, I’m probably just very judgmental as their live performance was fantastic. Three guys, tons of energy, Madness-style posturing, a sense of humour evidently mostly though their garms (they wearing pearls and sombreros) and some killer SL2-meets-The-Streets type crunchy beats. I was glad I couldn’t hear the lyrics properly, as I suspect they were a bit novelty and would possibly have annoyed me.
Bar – rip-off or value for money?
Standard piss.
Venue staff – nice or nasty?
Nice variety of goths and, er, metal-types.
Toilets – swilling with piss, or spick and span?
Reasonably spick n' span.
Highlight / lowlight of show?
High - The intro to "Momma’s Boy", when the guys teased a huge crowd reaction out of the extended silence about 2 bars in. Also, the merchandise man hooking me up with after-show tickets.
Low - Bonafied clubbin, the type that made me feel old…
Any other comments?
I would go and see them again tomorrow if they weren’t in Australia.
