Sad Kermit covers Elliott Smith's "Needle In The Hay"

sad_kermit.gifI'll tell ya, that bloody Sad Kermit will get you every time. He's done Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt", among others, and now he's covering Elliott Smith, who passed away a few years back.

This is "Needle In The Hay", which you might recognise from The Royal Tenenbaums. Truly, a meditation on heroin addiction only comes into its own when tackled by a green felt frog. A lot of YouTube commenters have got predictably hot under the collar over this cover, but I'm a huge Elliott Smith fan and found it funny. I mean come on, it's a muppet playing a sad song on the guitar.

This is the last of today's Muppet-related posts, honest...

Peaches and The Muppets' "F*ck The Pain Away" video mash-up

peaches_the_muppets.gifIn case you're not familiar with Peaches' track "Fuck The Pain Away", and are unable to glean from the title that it may be of a slightly adult nature, this is Not Safe For Work. Or Children. Or Your Mum.

This video mash-up, which comes via our friends at Dollymix, was created by a student at the University of San Francisco. The kicker? It was made for a class assignment and the student got an A++. Well deserved, say I... see what you reckon over the page.

Ballet's first outing on My Chemical Toilet, thanks to Pixies' "Where Is My Mind?"

pixies_ballet.gifThis little clip fits neatly into the box marked "Delightful". Or "Awww". Or "Huh. That was interesting." Or "I was kind of turned on until the kiddies showed up". Or "If all ballet was set to indie rock classics I might entertain the possibility of watching it a little more. Or ever, in fact". Big box, that last one, to fit that title.

Enough wittering. Watch this melding of cultures over the page.'Tis good.

Forwarding Fodder - The Six String Sonics

I find that people tend to send me stuff that's really weird and headwrecky. This is no exception. It's a group of Japanese musicians who have six single-string guitars, an 8 foot bass, some sensor drums and a pylon. You won't be able to understand until you press play. Fans of Krautrock and Tortoise, apply here.

Forwarding Fodder - A bloke shows us how to sing like T-Pain

There's loads of kerfuffle on the web about this bloke called T-Pain. Now, T-Pain's a soul crooner... but everyone reckons he can't sing for toffee. The spat seems to be over the use of Autotune (that thing that made Cher sound really weird). Well, some bloke has rigged up Autotune to show us how to sound jus' like T-Pain... and the results are pretty funny. This'll be doing the rounds in your inbox any day now. Enjoy. Forwarding Fodder - "Ken Lee"

This is fast becoming an 'net classic. It's from Bulgarian Pop Idol, with a young lady called Valentina Hasan decided to sing Mariah Carey's (cover of Harry Nilsson's cover of Badfinger's) 'Without You'... or... as your Valentina calls it, 'Ken Lee'. Enjoy the "tulibu dibu douchoooo" section. Brilliant. [video:shushaholsch]

Forwarding Fodder: 6-year-old breakdancing fiend!

This has been landing in my inbox for the past coupla weeks now and I just have to share it with you all. Okay, it's not a band doing something inordinately wacky, but if you can't see the link between music and breakdancing, there's no hope for you. Anyway, what's the beef? Well, here's some insane 6-year-old kid who can breakdance like a muvvafugger! As the homlies might say... he's hella dope! I've never sounded so white have I? Anyway, pass this on and dazzle your mates.

'Moskau' gets translated... badly

Remember when I showed you the (unintentionally) hilarious 'Moskau' by Dschinghis Khan? Well, it seems it's a bit of an internet hit, and some clever sod who is far funnier than me has posted the video up with English subtitles. Thankfully the subs aren't mere translation, but rather what the foreign lyrics sound like. I suggest you watch it and get ready for some serious tittering. There are moments of sublime comedy awaiting you...

Forwarding Fodder: Supergrass do Michael Jackson (not literally of course)

If you can get past the appalling Fearne Cotton in this clip, you might just find a little bit of pop gold. Supergrass, pretending to be called Diamond Hoo-Haa Men, rattle through a fuzzed-up cover of Michael Jackson's 'Beat It' on ITV1 show, Guilty Pleasures. Now, I take umbridge with this slightly as Thriller ain't really a guilty pleasure is it? It's a cracking LP! Anyway, Supergrass obviously feel a little shamed, so join in the blush and press play on the vidjio below.

Non-SXSW article: Britney Spears goes all Manga in new video for "Break The Ice"

Is it callous to include SXSW in every article at the moment just to get the hits up? Who cares! Britney Spears, a person whose name I consistently type in wrong on first stab (Briteny) has a new track out, and what with her being unwell, instead of going through all that filming, she's gone and turned herself Manga-esque. The track, 'Break The Ice' might not be my bag, but the video is pretty swish. Watch it now.

Forwarding Fodder: Tally Hall - 'Good Day'

Fans of Ben Folds and other forms of ambitious pop, prick up an ear up now. Tally Hall, and their 'Good Day', are ready to set your theorised brain alight with their brand of wonky piano-led pop. Apparently this track is taken from Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum... which means nothing to me I'm afraid. Regardless, this is a video that's got 'going viral' written all over it.

Forwarding Fodder: even Windows XP makes nicer sounds than a saxophone

This is very clever, and in absolutely no way a huge waste of time on the part of the person who created it. He / she (ok, he) has made a rather pretty composition using just sounds from the Windows operating system. It sounds a bit like what would happen if The Knife soundtracked an action flick or something. God bless nerdlingers with too much time on their hands.

Forwarding Fodder: The worst song ever recorded is "Video Games" by Black Out Band

Before I even start, I'll betcha that you won't hear a record as bad as this as long as you live. The track is called "Video Games" and the group are a buncha pre-pubes called Black Out Band (which sounds kinda BNP to me). Anyway, even if this group are more Far Right than Far Out, that's the least of their worries as they can't sing for toffee. If your average singer can hold a note, then this kid has dropped every note ever recorded into a mincer. This is incredibly awful... and worse still, it's not even a joke. These kids are serious. Even worse, they're called Hunter, Tug and Mathew.

Forwarding Fodder: Mos Def rips it up in Dave Chappelle's car

My mate sent me this as he's a) A huge Mos Def fan, and b) A huge fan of Dave Chappelle. So, with Mos Def in Michel Gondry's new flick Be Kind Rewind, it seems apt to chuck this up now. Basically, the video you're (hopefully) about to watch is Mos Def performing "Close Edge" in Dave Chappelle's car. It's a cracking rendition and, better yet, check out Chappelle's fanboy face throughout. You'd be the same, wouldn't ya?

Lionel Richie sings "Hello" on helium

Since this is dated March 2007 on YouTube, I need to preface it with "you may have seen this before, but..."

You may have seen this before, but if not here is Lionel Richie singing his slush classic "Hello" after inhaling helium. On German TV, naturally.

Forwarding Fodder: The Beach Boys' "God Only Knows" acappella style

This landed in my inbox recently, and, with it being Valentine's Day, it seems reasonably apt to put it up here. This acappella version of The Beach Boys' "God Only Knows" is a pretty enough rendition, and let's face it, it's the most realistic romance song ever made - it's sad, desperate, hopelessly in love... In short, it's nothing short of fantastic. This version? Make your own mind up when you click 'play'.

Forwarding Fodder: Mystery sped up video turns up on My Chemical Toilet

My Chemical Toilet can make sense of the biggest nonsenses in the world. Last week, someone sent me a sped up video with the message of LOL!!!!!1!!1. It meant nothing to me. I ignored it. I got on with my life. To a degree.

Then, lo-and-behold, I have a see what the editor has been gettin' up to and *BAM*... there it is. It was the video I'd been sent, only at the normal speed. It was The Hills' Heidi Montag singing about stuff. Oddly enough, now I've seen the proper video, the sped up one makes more sense. What a strange world we live in.

First prisoners, now commuters: Michael Jackson's "Thriller" dance hits the tube

That video of the prisoners doing the "Thriller" dance was good, wasn't it? However, could they do it on a train? Some folk with too much time on their hands did just that recently, and not any old train, either - the London Underground. Which means they got about as much reaction as they would have if they had sneezed.

Please please please let this trend not be some krazy viral thing dreamt up by record company executives?

Forwarding Fodder - Metronomy's "Radio Ladio"

Goddabe honest with you here. I've never heard of Metronomy. However, their video for single "Radio Ladio" is looking like one of those 'going viral' things. If you're thinking 'going viral? Are they ill?', try thinking about how the entire world forwarded the OK Go treadmill video to each other. That's viral maaan. Anyway, this video has all the hallmarks of something that is gonna drive people wild. Big bold colours, kinda DIY and, most importantly, a tune catchier than bird flu.

Forwarding Fodder: Lisa Loeb plays in Ikea

My mate used to fancy the specs off Lisa Loeb when he was at school. He digs the bookish type. So when he forwarded this to me, I wasn't especially surprised. Watching the video, where Loeb plays in an Ikea to save a bloke's marriage, it's clear that this ain't the real deal... It seems to be from a website called www.MarkLivesInIkea.com. To be honest with you, I ain't checkin' as these things tend to be a bit crap... but... this video is pretty cool. And you bookworm fanciers can have a nice wistful sigh at Loeb, looking lovely as ever.

Forwarding Fodder: Vadrum meets Super Mario Bros

When you get an email with the topic of "MARIO PROG!" you have just have to prick up an ear and see what the dealio is. Basically, the video is of an insane Italian drummer called Andrea Vadrucci who clearly has far too much time on his hands... and thank God he does. Drumming along to the various Mario theme songs at breakneck speeds, Varducci shows Animal from The Muppets how it's really done. The folks at Wii Wii are gonna cry when they see this!

Forwarding Fodder - Song sung backwards... but what is it?

Now, this video isn't exactly about pop music, but it does feature some singing. More importantly for the Forwarding Fodder section, it's been going viral 3.1 (or something) and landing in surprised inboxes all over the world. I'd like to tell you more about it, but that would be spoiling the surprise for those of you who haven't seen it. All I can say is that YouTube was invented for things like this. Folly? You betcha!

Forwarding Fodder: Fur Q's "Uzi Lover" on The Day Today

daytoday.gif1994's The Day Today was, and shall forever be, one of the greatest comedy series ever ever ever. Ever. It took the piss out of pretty much every aspect of TV news, and music didn't escape.

The Fur Q sketch was only a minute and a half long, but anybody who sees it instantly feels the need to share it with their mates - so it's fortunate that there are kindly souls around to nick it and put it on ver Tube.

From the Phil Collins sample (sounded ridiculous at the time - then this happened), to the none-more-macho lyrics ("Uzi like a metal dick in my hand, magazine like a big testicle gland"), to the music critic defending onstage murders as "ironic", the segment nailed gangsta rap perfectly. This chap really was a naughty rapper.

This will brighten your day. Check it out after the click.

The Onion's list of the Worst Band Names of 2007

onion_logo.gifA couple of weeks back The Onion, pretty much the funniest website on the interplanet, did a feature detailing the worst band names of 2007. And what a list it is. When you consider that their list covers 2007 alone, it makes you wonder what kind of hellish collection they could compile if they were to cover the last ten years or more.

To mitigate the piss-taking they do link to each artist's website / MySpace page, so the mentally-monikered do get something out of it. So, to find out who joins Shout Out Out Out Out, The Asbestos Tampons and Chevy Metal on the list, click here.

Forwarding Fodder - Tori Amos throws front-rowers out of her gig

When Tori Amos played San Diego recently, she showed two girls with ants in their pants that she isn't one for messing about. The girls, sat in the front row, presumably weren't paying enough attention and coming and going as they pleased. So, during 'Code Red', Tori stopped short and, with echo still on the mic, shouted "Get the fuck out of my show! It's a privilege to sit in the front row and I reserve those seats for people who appreciate music, get the fuck out!"

Fast forward to about 2:10 to see it. Tori fans must be a meek bunch - I woulda kicked up a serious stink and demanded a refund...

Forwarding Fodder - Fan fills in for missing Pete Doherty at Babyshambles gig

Babyshambles. Not only are they pointless but they're an embarrassment to ears. Now, if you think that skagbag pus-producer Pete Doherty is a hapless sham, then consider this... his fans are worse.

At O2 the NME held a gigthing, which Mr Doherty couldn't be bothered turning up for; so, the barely existing band hoiked some fanboy from the crowd to step into the shoes of Mr C. Pipe. The toe-curling results can be seen in this shocking video. We're all 2.0 and ev'ryfink man.

Forwarding Fodder - Janet Jackson's boob at the Superbowl

Vintage fodder time. I say vintage... it wasn't that long ago really, but in internet terms, it was aeons ago. What am I talking about? Well, with the recent news that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are to perform at the 2008 Superbowl, it's time to look back at one of the most infamous half time performances, namely, Janet Jackson's 'accidental' boob appearance. It's easy to forget that Justin Timberlake was involved with the performance, and was actually responsible for the 'unveiling'. Still, when this happened, the world found its inbox filled with a very unflattering barm being flashed for all to see. Oops! [video trentjackson]

Forwarding Fodder - Google is better than Limewire for pinching tunes (apparently)

I have some very dull and very techie mates. One of them sent me this... possibly to wind me up as I don't like downloading tunes, never mind stealin' 'em... to show me how Google is actually better for downloading tunes than Limewire and the like. Of course, it's all very illegal, and there isn't a soul at MyChemicalToilet who partakes in this behaviour (apart from that lad in the corner who sleeps under his desk and cries at the sight of daylight). However, it is interesting if you understand what this bloke (Jimmy R) is talking about. A world of illicit music awaits you. Now, don't shoot the messenger.

Forwarding Fodder - Leslie Hall's How We Go Out

The "strangely glamorous and unflattering" Leslie Hall is getting a fair bit of notoriety thanks to massive viewing figures on YouTube. Apparently, she's an American (satirical) rapper and front-woman for the band Leslie and the Ly's. Her 'How We Go Out' track features Leslie in some horrendous outfits... and... well... rapping. I've been sent this video no less than 12 times in the past month... and I still don't get it.

To you and me, 'going viral' is a moronic version of 'every bugger forwards it to every bugger's inbox for months on end'. The first video to really reap the benefits of the web and YouTube was the grand-daddy of the 'viral' video, and that's the sublime Ok Go promo for Here It Goes Again.
