Supergrass return as the Diamond Hoo Ha Men, play annoyingly small London shows

It does annoy me when bands take on alter egos. OK, for secret gigs it's fair enough, but beyond that my weary brain kind of thinks "ugh, so I have to get my head around a whole new band that isn't even a whole new band?"

All of that goes out the window if said alter ego produces something worth listening to, mind. Fortunately that's the case with Supergrass's new single, which is called "Diamond Hoo Ha Man" and which they're promoting as the Diamond Hoo Ha Men. You may spot a connection there.

"Diamond Hoo Ha Man" sounds a bit like Queens Of The Stone Age covering Jet. Or, er, vice versa. I mean that in the best possible way, you understand. A couple of video teasers have been posted on El Tube, but I'd suggest you head over to their MySpace to give the full track a listen.

There's something heartwarming about a band you may think would be irrelevant coming back with material that sounds perky and compelling, isn't there?

Oh, and the alter ego thing - I think it might be Gaz and Danny's way of promoting the new material while poor old Mick recovers from a pesky broken back. So I'll forgive them that. Super Diamond Hoo Ha Grass Men are playing a set at the Apple store in London tomorrow night, and it's being recorded for an iTunes EP. I'd imagine unless you have tickets already you have very little chance of getting into that, so it might be worth switching your attention to their appearance at Pure Groove Records in North London this coming Saturday.

"Diamond Hoo Ha Man" is released on quaint old limited edition 7" today.
