The Kooks, Jarvis, Hot Chip - October sees the return of Oxjam. Guilt-free gigging ahoy!

Untitled-2.jpgFeel bad frittering away your hard earned cash to see random bands? Well, this is for charity! After the success of last year's events, Oxfam are returning this October to launch Oxjam, their fundraising festival featuring hundreds of local and big-name acts at events up and down the country.

To launch Oxjam a number of secret gigs will be held at London Oxfam shops in early October including performances from The Kooks, Hot Chip, Fatboy Slim, Jamelia and a gentleman who looks like he's been in a charity shop or two, Jarvis Cocker. Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim) told Oxfam he's donated old records to charity shops before but performing in one “will be a first”. You can win tickets for these intimate sets through the Oxfam website.

They join a number of high profile acts at the week long festival, including The Chemical Brothers, Madness, Pendulum, Simian Mobile Disco and Good Shoes. Electric Proms announce Mark Ronson, Kaiser Chiefs & Jamie Cullum

ronsonsb.jpg

The BBC have announced some of the acts confirmed for next month’s Electric Proms. The five day Camden festival is spread across eight venues and 80 different acts will perform, though not in their usual style. The aim of the event is to ‘create new moments in music’.

Among the highlights announced this week, Mark Ronson will rework tracks from his album Version… already a reworking of other artists’ songs. Jamie Cullum will duet with Japanese jazz monkeys Soil & Pimp Session, and Sigur Ros will premier their documentary film Heima with a special acoustic set. The Kaiser Chiefs will get stuck in too - teaming up to perform with Bond score maestro David Arnold.

Rude boys! Get skanking down to Swindon for the Sugarhill Festival!

rudeboy1.jpgA wafting breeze of skunk will settle over Swindon this weekend with the arrival of the Sugarhill Festival taking place on Warren Farm.

Seeing summer out in a flurry of black and white check, the festival, which is named after the hill the main stage sits on (not the famous hip-hop and disco record label) will host The Beat, Dreadzone and Neville Staples (formally of The Specials) as well as dub master, The Mad Professor.

Over 25 acts will play during the two day event which will also include a showcase for local real ales and cider as well as offering you a Chill Out tent and a wide choice of food to choose from over the weekend. Sounds alright by me! Click here to buy tickets.

Bestival Preview: Chemical Brothers, Calvin Harris and Bat For Lashes

chems.jpg

August has gone, the sun never really arrived, and so we creep into September with hopes for an Indian summer. And what does September mean? Get ready, Isle Of Wight, it’s Bestival time.

Bestival organisers are clearly a little confused about their festival alter ego. Their website – complete with cartoon wizards and hat-wearing owls – suggests boutique. Their organisational ethos suggests commercial – with lots of handy PDFs to download like timetables of acts and a site map. But their line-up suggests mega-budget, with twelve arenas full of talent.

Tidy weekend goes to the dark side with a Star Wars theme

vader.jpgThe force looks strong for the Tidy Weekender, which takes place in Pontins Holiday Park, Prestatyn, Wales, from 5-7 October... although they really should have had it on May 4th shouldn't they? Geddit? No? May the 4th be with you... I'll get me coat.

Spinning horrendous trance at the event will be Judge Jules, Lisa Lashes, Anne Savage, Sander Van Doorn and Rob Tissera (and more!) who'll be taking fans on a trip to the dark side. Wooo. The Pontins holiday park will be transformed into a Hoth wasteland of Class A drugs and gurning for the 12th Tidy Weekender. Expect house, trance and hard house in the four arenas, with music running from 10pm until 6am on Friday and Saturday (3am on Sunday). Expect a few impromptu after parties in the chalets too...

A spokesman said: "The theme has been set and it is guaranteed the Tidy faithful will faultlessly adhere to the intergalactic attire. Expect Storm Troopers and Ewoks a plenty and a fair sprinkling of Darth Vader masks. It’s time to polish off those lightsabers, laser guns and blasters, as Tidy goes super sonic." Tickets are on sale now, priced £110, and are available HERE. Note that the chalet style accommodation requires group bookings.

Electric Picnic - Line-up of the summer?

elecpicnic.jpg

Are you going to Electric Picnic, taking place this weekend in at Stradbally Hall Estate, Stradbally, Co. Laois, Ireland? If so, you're a jammy so-and-so. The Electric Picnic sneakily got itself the best line-up of the summer with acts like Bjork, Polyphonic Spree, Beastie Boys, Sonic Youth, Iggy and The Stooges, Jarvis Cocker, Jesus and Mary Chain, Scott Matthews, !!!, Spiritualized (acoustic), Ladytron, Stephen Fretwell and Sons and Daughter. Phew! And you thought Glasto had it all?

I'll be speaking to some revelers next week to make us that aren't going generally jealous and for views on what Bjork et al was like!

franz-ferdinand-61.JPGLoopallu, the ‘little fest in the west’ (with a funny name) which takes place in the tiny picturesque West Coast fishing village of Ullapool on the shores of Loch Broom, Scotland on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd of September has announced that Franz Ferdinand are make their only UK festival appearance of this summer by headlining the Saturday night.

Bands to watch out for at the Carling Leeds/Reading festival

00013722_noisettes.jpgNow, for those of you who are going to Leeds or Reading this weekend, I'm sure you've already had a look at the line-up and have decided who you'll be watching. You may have had to toss a coin over the Ash/Razorlight clash (I'd like to toss a grenade at the pair of 'em to be honest), but delve a little deeper and you'll get a lot better than Smashing Pumpkins scowling through Zero.

Leeds/Reading has always thrown up some gems early in the bill. In a few years, half of 'em will be playing much higher up the bill, so why don't you catch 'em in a more intimate venue... or tent? Read over the jump to have a look at some of the hidden gems of the Carling weekend.

US Ozzfest offers Lordi and Lamb Of God for free

osbournes2.jpg

For the first time in its twelve year history, the US Ozzfest is offering fans a completely free hard rock experience this summer. And as much as it’s thrilling fans, it’s sending music promoters into freefall panic.

There will be a ‘price’ for the free-ness. In past years, the Ozzfest stage has played host to mega rock names like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Marilyn Manson and System Of A Down. Hell, they even reunited Ozzy’s old bandmates Black Sabbath. But this year’s freebie will be more focused on up-and-coming acts, although Lamb Of God and Hatebreed will headline alongside deathmetal Eurovision winners Lordi.

Festival sicknotes: the lamest excuses for missing a set

aguilera.gifIs it too much to ask that bands stop partying for an evening to actually do what they are supposed to and turn up for a show? Well, yes apparently, it is. Lily Allen has been bandying her cancellation excuses around MySpace and it would seem she is not the only one "swinging the lead" (Google it).

Here are 5 lame reasons for cancelling gigs:

• Christina Aguilera has this week knocked two shows off her tour schedule due to a ‘viral upper respiratory tract infection’. Is that what they’re calling up the duff these days? ALLEGEDLY etc.

Latest V Festival news: The Bravery pull out, Robyn pops in

bravery02.jpg

The V Festival is one of the highlights of the UK festival calendar, but what it gains in finale status it often loses in line-up depletion as many exhausted bands fall by the wayside due to their gruelling summer schedules.

As I mentioned the other day, Lily Allen may not be well enough to perform after contracting sinusitis and strep throat due to her globetrotting.

Now The Bravery have officially pulled out, although their reasons for doing so are still shrouded in mystery. It follows the cancellation of a slot by Bright Eyes on Monday. Yep, the poor exhausted rock stars are dropping like flies.

Creamfields to give a chance to talented young musicians

creamfields_neckband.jpgWhen I think of Creamfields, I actually think of fields made out of cream. Obviously, those of you with a brain will know that it's the yearly dance music fest that takes place, this year at least, at Daresbury, Halton, Cheshire on Saturday 25th August... and they have added another stage to the line-up.

The Streetwaves Stage, which was originally going to be part of the recently cancelled Matthew Street Festival, has now been added to the Creamfields bill. The stage will feature 10 bands that have won the opportunity to perform, thanks to a competition run by the Liverpool Culture Company.

Field Day, Underage Festival, Bloom, Redbourn - this weekend's festival preview round up

01batforlashes.jpg

The weekend is nearly upon us and the sunshine looks like it’s going to last right through! So I thought I’d give you a round up of some other good news about the next batch of festivals. Here goes…

- The Underage Festival – the UK’s first for under 19s – is gearing up for its launch at Victoria Park in London at midday today. Mercury Music Prize nominees The Young Knives are set to perform, alongside just-announced acts Lethal Bizzle, Jack Penate and The Maccabees. There’s so much info there’s a whole separate post about it on this site!

Preview: This afternoon's Underage Festival

youngknives1.jpg

This afternoon’s first ever Underage Festival in London’s Victoria Park has got an unenviable task. How do you entertain the world’s most hostile audience (teenagers) and be alcohol-free and strictly under 19s while still maintaining an aura of cool? It’s a toughie.

I wouldn’t want the job, but organisers seem to be stepping up to the plate. First tick in the box for them is a massive and frankly impressive line up. Radio One is hosting a stage, as are MySpace (naturally) who have been busily promoting the event.

+44 cancel all European dates including Reading and Leeds festivals

%2B44_band.jpg+44 (what a terrible band name eh?) have decided that writing their new songs is more important than playing their slots at this year's Reading and Leeds Festivals, which take place at the twin sites of Richfield Avenue, Reading and Bramham Park, Leeds over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

In a statement from the band (which include members of the woeful Blink 182), they announced that they will be cancelling their entire European tour, and going back to the studio to begin recording the follow-up to their debut album, 'When Your Heart Stops Beating'.

The band commented "We want to start writing new songs and and we are really excited about the direction we have planned, so we're going into the studio instead of playing these few dates. We hope our fans will forgive us for the cancellation; in the end, this will make for an even better live show when we come back."weekend after Reading and Leeds takes place.

KT Tunstall to headline Beautiful Days

KtTunstall.jpgAre you heading down to Beautiful Days taking place at Escot Park, near Fairmile, Devon from Friday 17th to Sunday 19th August? Well, you may have been puzzling over who the headline act is for the Friday... puzzle no more! The announcement had to be held back for 'contractual reasons', and now KT Tunstall is confirmed as headlining the main stage on the Friday night.

She joins the line-up which includes Gogol Bordello, perennial festival faves the Levellers and acts that include Afro Celt Sound System, Back to the Planet, Dreadzone, Dub Pistols, Easy Star All Stars, Howard Marks, New Model Army, Rennie Pilgrem, The Damned, The Men They Couldn't Hang, Whirlygig with Banco De Gaia and Gaudi, Willy Mason, and many more. All the goss on Fruitstock's successor - the Innocent Village Fete

innocent.jpg

Soft drinks brand Innocent’s string of fetes across the UK culminates in their first mega Village Fete in London’s Regents Park this Saturday and Sunday.

The first thing to point out is: don’t expect the Village Fete to be a carbon copy of Innocent’s previous festival incarnation, Fruitstock. The success of the laid back, free event swelled over time so that a crowd of 200,000 turned up last year, and Innocent have no desire to repeat it.

This weekend's festival news update

benjerry.jpg

Fingers are crossed all over the country that the evil weather will quieten down in the next few days to allow this weekend’s festival brood to go on unscathed. We’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, here’s a round up of the latest news on what to expect.

- Global Gathering will defy the weather to stay on this weekend, says the NME. All hail Long Marston Airfield’s drainage system, apparently the reason for the braving of the elements. Basement Jaxx and Faithless will probably not be bothered about the availability of hot showers what with their luxury tour buses, but the punters will be chuffed to bits.

The Shins added to Tennent's bill

shins.jpgAnother act has been confirmed for Tennent's Vital, which is taking place this year at the new location of Belfast’s Ormeau Park on Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd August.

Added to the Main Stage for day two, joining headliners The Killers as well as Kasabian, Mark Ronson and Albert Hammond Jr, are The Shins.

Day one has Razorlight, Manic Street Preachers, and The View, with another act still to be confirmed. There's still acts to be announced for the Radio 1 Incoming Stage for both days.

Tickets are on sale now priced at £70 for both days or £38 for either day, and can be bought from here.

Klaxons, Arctic Monkeys, Amy Winehouse - The festivals where you can catch Nationwide Mercury Prize nominees

batforlashes.gifYou may have noticed that the shortlist for this year's Nationwide Mercury Awards was announced the other day. So it's only a couple of months until the papers go mental over the odds of the potential winners, in marked contrast to how much the record-buying public actually cares.

If, however, you would like to see which festivals all these marvellous folk are playing, you may do so below because I've typed that very information there.

Bat For Lashes
- ‘Fur And Gold’

You can catch Bat (pictured), or "Natasha" as she's know to her friends, at Field Day, Connect Festival, Electric Picnic and Bestival. She's also playing Rock En Seine if you happen to be in France towards the end of August.

The Young Knives - 'Voices of Animal and Men'

Ashby de la Zouch's favourite sons have already played Glastonbury and will also be playing the Redhill Park Music Festival, the Electric Gardens Festival, Leeds / Reading and the Underage festival at London's Victoria Park.

Jamie T - ‘Panic Prevention’

Jamie T will be inspiring severe brappage at Lowlands, Leeds / Reading and also this weekend's Benicassim fest in Spain.

Festivals round-up: Latitude and Indian Summer brighten rather than dampen spirits, problems mar Guilfest, Marilyn Manson footage from Download

waynecoyne.gif- A speaker stack collapsed at Guilfest on Friday, and the comments below this story suggest that while the festival was designed to be mud-free there are other mucky elements they need to look at sorting out

- Observer Music Monthly has a focus on a few of the big events that have taken place this year. Glastonbury this year was "amazing", according to Emily Eavis (but then she would say that, wouldn't she?). Also interviewed are Damon Albarn and Johnny Borrell

- Latitude's growing reputation won't have been harmed by - whaaaat?? - good weather. CSS were among the many acts who impressed Uncut.co.uk (who are one of the festival's sponsors)

Rise against racism this weekend features Kelis, The Holloways and Jamelia

kelis.jpg

Where can you see Kelis, The Holloways and Jamelia for free? Rise Against Racism, which takes place this Sunday (15th July) in Finsbury Park, London.

It's quite a coup for the festival organisers to book Kelis - after all, Jamelia's milkshakes don't bring quite so many boys to the yard, do they? Because, guess what, Kelis's are better than yours ...

The most ridiculous band names on the festival circuit: Sportsday Megaphone, The Trouser Trumpets are just the tip of the iceberg

sportsday-megaphone.gif

Remember how stupid you felt when you tried to make your mates buy tickets to see a random teenager called Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly? Or when you raved about the unknown New Young Pony Club? Or you heard somebody snigger when you tried to tell them that the Victorian English Gentleman's Club is actually a group of teenagers?

Yes, they're ridiculous names, but I can now reveal that next year's successful-yet-stupidly-named band will feature the words tree or monkey and / or be called Dave. Honest.

So if you're off to a festival and you arrive early, I suggest you check out these bands or DJs. I've got no idea if they're any good, but it's worth a snidey snigger at their name now, and possibly a smug smile and getting to say "Oh yes, I saw them live last year. Keep up" when they make it big.

Antiworld 070707 Festival - Fergie, Coldcut and Banana Dave hit the Hampshire countryside

antiworld.gif

While the rest of the country's at Live Earth (or Eva Longoria's wedding. Maybe), the underground dance enthusiasts of the south will be packing themselves into Aldershot's Rushmoor Arena for the Antiworld 777 festival

The new festival has booked some amazing headliners, like Beastie Boys' DJ Mix Master Mike, Fergie (the DJ, not the princess / singstress / football manager), Layo & Bushwacka and Coldcut. And of course, the legendary er, Thrash Jelly, Ross vs Moon and the (possibly) world-famous Banana Dave.

T In The Park Preview - Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party, Lily Allen head to Perth & Kinross

tinthepark.jpg

Balado, Perth and Kinross are getting ready for some serious mud action this weekend as the sold out T In The Park returns to the area. For the first time, the event is stretched over three days – though be warned you’ll only be allowed access to the Friday night if you’ve got a weekend camping pass.

So what can you expect? Well, sludge for one – as the nasty weather that has been plaguing the UK over the last few days is set to continue. No worries though – in a year of firsts there’ll be on-site showers and lockers for your stuff.

T is going more than a little green this year. Those who can be arsed can make 10p a pop collecting and returning cups and you can even recycle your tent! Plus there’ll be a Healthy T area, where you can gorge yourself on things like chickpeas and mungbeans (I imagine) and watch demonstrations by top chefs… if you’re not too busy watching the bands that is.

Oh yes right, the bands! T organisers have just announced a few final additions. The Bravery will grace the Radio 1 / NME stage, Ross Copperman will brave the Pet Sounds Arena and the King Tut’s Tent line-up will be boosted by Jamie Scott & The Town.

Connect Festival adds Candie Payne and Scott Matthews to an already impressive bill

candie_payne.jpg
