Bands to watch out for at the Carling Leeds/Reading festival
Now, for those of you who are going to Leeds or Reading this weekend, I'm sure you've already had a look at the line-up and have decided who you'll be watching. You may have had to toss a coin over the Ash/Razorlight clash (I'd like to toss a grenade at the pair of 'em to be honest), but delve a little deeper and you'll get a lot better than Smashing Pumpkins scowling through Zero.
Leeds/Reading has always thrown up some gems early in the bill. In a few years, half of 'em will be playing much higher up the bill, so why don't you catch 'em in a more intimate venue... or tent? Read over the jump to have a look at some of the hidden gems of the Carling weekend.
The Noisettes - Quite simply, The Noisettes are one of the most thrilling bands on the planet at the moment. Mixing rock and roll with psychedelia, garage punk, prog and funk, The Noisettes make an unholy racket with the kind of fever that you ain't seen since you watched a baptist priest talk in tongues with a snake 'round his head. Prepared to be astonished and catch yourself yelling Don't Give Up! for the rest of the weekend.
Reverend and the Makers - Sharp, tight angular mod punk from some thin blokes in tailored suits. No, it's not The Jam, but rather, a mean eyed bunch of misfits set to rip your ears apart until your hips involuntarily shake.
The Horrors - Despite the disappointment (in the production) of their debut LP, this band are definitely still worth catching live. Garage punk meets big hair and creepy tales and howls from the belly of hell. If their is anyone trying to continue the good (or should that be evil?) work of The Cramps, then these boys are there down the front with flaming skulls and voodoo. Catch 'em whilst their still alive.
!!! - Now, if you want to pronounce this, you can opt for any repetitive sound, but most commonly, they'll go for Tchk! Tchk! Tchk! If you like rewired disco and kraut stylings, then this is where it's at. !!! will make you feel weird inside... but they'll also make you grin and dance like a goon. The perfect festival band.
