All the goss on Fruitstock's successor - the Innocent Village Fete

Soft drinks brand Innocent’s string of fetes across the UK culminates in their first mega Village Fete in London’s Regents Park this Saturday and Sunday.

The first thing to point out is: don’t expect the Village Fete to be a carbon copy of Innocent’s previous festival incarnation, Fruitstock. The success of the laid back, free event swelled over time so that a crowd of 200,000 turned up last year, and Innocent have no desire to repeat it.

So ding dong, Fruitstock died and in its place is the slightly more corporate Village Fete. Despite a burgeoning media partner list – this year including Capital Radio, The Guardian & The Observer, Apsalls Cider, Penguin and Yorkshire Tea – there will be a ticket charge. However don’t go scrimping and saving – the minimal cover charge of a fiver is merely, so say organisers, to control numbers and cap the crowd at about 30,000.

But don’t panic that the newly structured event will ruin Innocent’s fresh, natural happy-go-lucky mantra. Partners have been specifically chosen to complement Innocent’s values and enhance the experience (hopefully this means as many freebies as last year on top of the endless stocks of yummy Innocent products). And it’s not all take take take – ticket sale profits will go to charities Wellchild, Friends of the Earth and The Samaritans.

In keeping with the fete theme, expect stereotypical activities like Morris Dancing, welly wanging, fruit and veg competitions and a record attempt at the world’s longest bunting. That’s of course alongside a music line-up including The Epstein, Kitty, Daisy & Lewis, Seth Lakeman, Geno Washington and Ben Westbeech.

Borough Market’s famous stallholders will be shifting location for the weekend to be part of a huge farmers market, there’ll be open air yoga, kids activities and real ale and cider tents. You can even submit photos to win a year’s supply of smoothies.

Pitched as “the summer’s biggest little fete”, the smaller crowd should mean the same welcoming family atmosphere that Fruitstock enjoyed. Indeed kids enter for an even cheaper £2.50 while babies get in free. You can still bag tickets online here so why not? After all as Innocent say themselves, it’s better than staying in and watching Columbo.
