In-Tents Questioning: Glastonbury - Jon Hartley
Jon Hartley is a true Glasto veteran - so how did he find this year's event compared to previous years? Here he tells us about Geordie midgets, Welsh Oggies and Stan Collymore.
1. Kindly tell us your name, age and where you’re from. Now.
Jon Hartley, 29. London.
2. Which festival have you recently attended?
Glastonbury 2007.
3. Have you attended this festival before? If yes, how does this year compare?
Yes. This was my 10th Glastonbury. I’ve seen some muddy ones but this one just about takes the crown of muddiest yet. As usual nobody seemed to care that it was raining and muddy.
Overall I thought that little improvements occurred without the festival losing its unique feel. This year's big improvement was the late-night fun. No longer is it just Lost Vagueness that provides after-hours fun - Trash City and the new Park area were chipping in as well, and that helped.
4. Which act gave the best performance, and why?
Very hard to say. Probably The Bays, a great ska band who rocked the West Side Dance tent. Alongside that, I felt that Arcade Fire were blindingly good. A spot-on performance that was full of passion. It would have been perfect if they had played ‘Keep the Car Running’.
5. If you could have promoted one act on the bill to headline status, who would you choose? Why?
Probably Madness. Seeing them at Lost Vagueness was intimate and fantastic. However, seeing tens of thousands trying to skank would have been great.
6. Did your opinion of any acts change radically as a result of their performance?
Klaxons. I liked them before but their performance was superb and was one of the highlights.
They are a perfect festival band, blending the best of dance and indie. They will always go down well at Glastonbury.
7. Nicest surprise / biggest disappointment (music-related or otherwise)?
The Welsh Oggies (yum!) / People getting all the way to the urinals and then pissing on the floor. Defies belief!
8. What was the best heckle you heard?
‘Stop getting Bond wrong!’ – at Shirley Bassey.
9. Any high-quality onstage banter you feel deserves highlighting?
Comedian Mark Thomas – ‘The art of heckling is to not make yourself look like a twat.’
10. What was the funniest moment (music-related or otherwise)?
A trashed bloke stumbling and pissing in a big circle in the Pyramid Stage field on Wednesday evening. He then promptly fell over and passed out into it all having not managed to put his cock away.
11. Weirdest moment (if different)?
A Geordie midget (with a huge mate who looked like Lurch) telling everyone at Madness that he is a skinhead and loves reggae & ska, and that he had 16 year-old DMs - before showing everyone his skanking dance. Oh, and taking part in the silent disco was great fun!
12. Any moments of sheer terror you’d like to share?
Being followed around the festival by Stan Collymore.
13. Anything you wish you’d brought with you?
An all-in-one waterproof suit.
14. Anything you wish you’d left behind?
I left quite a few things, so no.
15. Please mark the following elements out of 10, with any comments:
General facilities:
8/10.
Crowd / audience::
7/10. Only due to the weather.
Food and drink value for money:
7/10. There are bargains to be found if you look hard enough
16. Finally – anything else you’d like to mention?
Roll on a sunny Glastonbury 2008!
