Festivals round up – the weather rains on everyone’s parade

You may have noticed a teeny tiny bit of rain across the UK this weekend. And BOY did it affect the festivals!
- The Glade Festival was one of the first to be badly hit by this weekend’s apocalyptical storms. With the Overkill Stage under nearly 2 feet of water and tents being washed away, organisers were forced to stop letting ticket holders in and many frustrated fans headed home without setting foot on site.
- Early arrivals at Eastern Haze were greeted not with the sight of a front row slot but high winds and driving rain. Lovely. The majority of the crowd crammed in to watch entertainment in the smaller side tents rather than brave the force 9 gale outside, meaning some main stage acts played to crowds of under 20.
- The Wickerman Festival avoided the worst of the weather, but had to survive without internet comic phenomenon The Wee Man after a stage accident. He fell off stage in Glasgow on Monday breaking his hip and wrist. However his band vowed to take a cardboard cutout of him on stage and carry on regardless.
- Festival goers attending the Lovebox Weekender got more than just music and mud – they were also helping save the world. Organisers were asking the crowd to join Action Aid’s “B*llocks To Poverty” tour and email a picture of them with a plate direct to the UN. Well it beats getting soaked.
- In Oxfordshire organisers of the Truck festival didn’t let the bad weather deter them. At the last minute they moved the acts who had braved the rain, including The Epstein and Goldrush, to a covered site at Oxford Brookes University and continued the music. The main festival has also been rescheduled for September 22nd, or you can get a refund at Truck’s MySpace.
- Those attending Wakestock in Wales weren’t so lucky. With access to the festival over marshland near the beach, it wasn’t long until all the access walks had been submerged and the rest of the festival was swiftly cancelled. Mark Ronson was pretty much the only big name act able to perform before the site became a swamp.
- The moral of the story? Go outside the UK. Uncut reports that Spanish beach festival Bencassim was awash with not flooding but sunlight and legendary performances from Klaxons, Arctic Monkeys and Muse. Jealous, us?
