In-Tents Questioning: Glastonbury - Dave Stevenson

davestevenson.gifDave Stevenson is one of My Chemical Toilet's esteemed bloggers. He went to Glastonbury and returned with tales of drug-taking stewards, Americans who look like your Dad and apologetic drunkards.

1. Kindly tell us your name, age and where you’re from. Now.

Dave Stevenson, 24, London.

2. Which festival have you recently attended?

I'm pretty sure it's Glastonbury, but it's hard to tell with all the mud on top.

3. Have you attended this festival before? If yes, how does this year compare?

I was here in 2005. When, surprise, surprise, it rained a lot, the grass turned to clay, and we spent a lot of time learning exactly why bin bags are a form of currency at music festivals.

4. Which act gave the best performance, and why?

Damien Rice. He's one miserable git, but his voice was outstanding.

5. If you could have promoted one act on the bill to headline status, who would you choose? Why?

The Hold Steady. They look like a band fronted by your dad, but they sounded superb.

6. Did your opinion of any acts change radically as a result of their performance?

The Killers. Good in 2005, terrible in 2007. They weren't helped by the fact that their sound engineer appeared to have had his hearing aid confiscated, but they offered no banter, no laughs, and were just a bit too polished for a mud-encrusted Glastonbury.

7. Nicest surprise / biggest disappointment (music-related or otherwise)?

Paolo Nutini. He appeared to be just a little bit off his face, but his voice was gorgeous and, as you'd hope for from a Scottish teenager, he looked like he couldn't believe his luck.

8. What was the best heckle you heard?

Not sure about the best, but "turn it up!" was a bit of a fixture.

9. Any high-quality onstage banter you feel deserves highlighting?

"You're right, who doesn't like the Jungle Book?" Paolo Nutini gets animated.

10. What was the funniest moment (music-related or otherwise)?

Joining in with anyone calling for anyone else around our tent.. For instance, "John?" "John?" "JOHN?"

11. Weirdest moment (if different)?

Watching a steward, fluorescent vest and everything, lighting up a spliff while on duty. That's not how authority figures are supposed to behave.

12. Any moments of sheer terror you’d like to share?

Looking down one of the long drops.

13. Anything you wish you’d brought with you?

Waterproofs that didn't spring leaks the second it started raining.

14. Anything you wish you’d left behind?

See above.

15. Please mark the following elements out of 10, with any comments:

General facilities:

8/10. Marked down a tad for the sound problems at the Pyramid stage. They have time to get this kind of thing right, don't they?

Crowd / audience:

10/10. Well behaved, cheerful, and endlessly apologetic when tripping over guy ropes at four in the morning.

Food and drink value for money:

10/10. Reasonably priced, good quality (the best ones have the longest queues), and nicely staffed.

16. Finally – anything else you’d like to mention?

Allow me to recommend the Magic Numbers if you're ever lying in a field, a bit pissed, having been awake for 28 hours.

Thanks for taking part in our humble questionnaire. Your place in heaven is assured (assuming you haven’t previously murdered anyone).
