Top 5 European Festival Countdown

That’s right pop pickers, summer 2007 has arrived (can someone please tell the weather?) so it’s time for a round up of the Top 5 Music Festivals in Europe. Hold on tight because here we go, etc…

5. Exit Festival, Serbia

Number 5 is a relative newcomer to the melee, but with Eastern Europe becoming a more and more fashionable holiday destination, the popularity of this one could take off. Serbia’s Exit Noise Summer Festival is South-Eastern Europe’s biggest and takes place in picturesque Novi Sad. Now in its sixth year, it’s a baby compared to some of the others in the chart, but it already attracts music-lovers from all over Europe. Although the main focus is dance, 2007’s line-up features The Cardigans and Franz Ferdinand alongside dance staples like Layo and Bushwacka. With the cost for the whole event coming in at just under £45, it’d be rude not to.

4. Eurockeennes, France

Okay, so you probably have no idea how to pronounce the festival that’s landed at Number 4, but it’s sure to involve some ooh la la. Eurockennes has been rocking the Malsaucy peninsular on the France-Switzerland border for the past 17 years and is probably Europe’s widest spanning festival, genre-wise. It showcases pop, hip-hop, reggae, rock, electro, latin, world music and metal. Whew! Just under 100,000 were expected this year to check out Daft Punk, Muse, The Strokes and Depeche Mode, amongst others. Camping by the river is a huge plus and a three day pass will set you back around £55.

3. Love Parade, Germany

The Love Parade has been turning Berlin into one giant loved-up club annually since 1989 (in fact, the first one was held just weeks before the fall of the Berlin Wall.) The symbol of the dance festival is the golden angel on top of the Victory Column in central Berlin's Grossen Stern, although from this year things are set to change. After a row over funding with Berlin authorities, the festival has decided to move location for the next five years. This summer’s parade and parties will be held in Essen next week with the rest at various other locations in the Ruhr region of Germany. Every Love Parade has its own anthem, and it’s free to attend (plus normal club entrance prices) which is a huge plus in my eyes.

2. Roskilde, Denmark

A top five European countdown wouldn’t be complete without giving a big nod to the largest music festival in Northern Europe. Roskilde has been running for thirty six years and throughout that entire time has been non-profit-making – the proceeds are split between cultural funds and humanitarian causes. It stretches over eight days in total, with 100,000 expected this year to see Muse, Bjork and The Beastie Boys. The ticket price of £120 covers over a week’s worth of entertainment and comes with a bonus feel-good glow about where your money’s going.

1. Glastonbury Festival, England

Glastonbury at number one on a countdown of top European festivals… cop out or natural certainty? You know the drill by now – for the past 37 years Somerset farmer Michael Eavis has run Europe’s largest music festival from his own Worthy Farm in Pilton. Now his daughter Emily helps him run it, traditionally over the last weekend in June – though recently it has started taking every other year off to give the land and the locals a chance to recover! It is the festival of legends – highlights this year included The Killers, The Who, Arctic Monkeys and Shirley Bassey. At £145 for three days it’s the costliest event in the countdown – but as my mother says: You get what you pay for.

So there you have it. Feel I’ve neglected one of your favourites? Want to point out a glaring error? Or just feeling in a disagreeable mood until the end of Friday and fancy a bicker? All comments and suggestions welcomed below.
