How much did this year’s Glastonbury Festival affect Mendip’s local economy? That is the question being put to businesses across the district as part of an economic impact assessment being carried out by Mendip District Council and the organisers of June’s festival. The aim of the study is to fully understand the economic effects of the world-famous event, and help to support the planning of future festivals.

As part of that investigation local businesses are being asked, through a survey, about their experiences and what impact the festival has on employment, trading and turnover. Cllr John Osman, Mendip District Council’s portfolio holder for regeneration, said: “Glastonbury Festival is such a huge event for Mendip that we hope this survey will provide us with important data to not only plan future festivals but look at how it affects the whole district."

He continued; “This information will enable us to examine our local economy, which is so important to many aspects of our lives and business, and how large scale events impact on how we do business in the district.”

The closing date to return the survey is August 31, and the results are expected in the Autumn. It is hoped the information gathered from the survey, which is one of the first to focus on the impact of the festival, will reveal valuable information that, until now, has not be identified.

Chris Arscott, Mendip’s regeneration manager, said: “We hope this study will not only help us to understand impacts on our local area but that what we discover will be of value to other local authorities and private groups who organise shows and festivals both in the UK and Europe. We hope information will surface from these surveys that will provide new leads for us to examine our local economy and how it is affected by events such as the Glastonbury Festival.” The survey can be completed either online at www.mendip.gov.uk by typing ‘glastonbury festival impact’ into the search box, or a hard copy version can be posted to you by contacting Sarah Jones on 0117 9338951.
