In-Tents Questioning: Green Man Festival – Katie Lee
Katie Lee kindly completed our questionnaire a couple of months back on her return from Glastonbury. Last weekend she took her big green Katiemobile to, appropriately, the Green Man Festival in Brecon, Wales. Here are her opinions and conga experiences.
1. Kindly tell us your name, age and where you’re from. Now.
I’m sure we’ve been through this... oh well, never mind. Katie Lee, 28, London
2. Which festival have you recently attended?
The Green Man
3. Have you attended this festival before? If yes, how does this year compare?
Yes, I have. It was still excellent, but busier and bigger, which is a Bad Thing. It’s not that I don’t want it to be a success, it’s just that I don’t want it to be spoiled like Glastonbury.
4. Which act gave the best performance, and why?
Victoria Williams (famous only for writing a song that Pearl Jam covered – Crazy Mary) absolutely blew me away. I thought she was amazing. Joanna Newsom and The Earlies were also excellent.
5. If you could have promoted one act on the bill to headline status, who would you choose? Why?
Victoria Williams. She was on at the tiny Green Man cafe which is basically the bandstand in the bar courtyard. She doesn’t perform very often and suffers from MS, but she should be worshipped and adored for being as bonkers and brilliant as Neil Young.
I also would have given John Smith a proper slot. The courtyard was packed and he went down a storm.
6. Did your opinion of any acts change radically as a result of their performance?
Devendra Banhart surprised me by being more Rock n’ Roll and less “crazy artiste” than I was expecting. Also, I’ve seen King Creosote quite a few times now and I want him to stop mucking about and do a proper show for once. Ditto The Aliens.
7. Nicest surprise / biggest disappointment (music-related or otherwise)?
Victoria Williams was the nicest surprise (did I mention her already?!). Robert Plant also surprised me by playing so many crowd-pleasers. Biggest disappointment was probably King Creosote’s rubbish sound levels AGAIN. He was my highlight at Glastonbury, so I’m sorry if I’m being capricious! He was great doing all the busking and a highlight was when he, Adem, James Yorkston and all the Fence Collective gang finished their busking and started a conga all the way to the dance tent.
8. What was the best heckle you heard?
There was an announcement that a child had been found and my very loud friend shouted out “I’ll have him – or her! But I’d prefer a boy if possible”. The festival is full of kids and parents so it was probably inappropriate, but it made me chuckle.
9. Any high-quality onstage banter you feel deserves highlighting?
Gruff is always excellent value for onstage banter and if John Smith’s music career doesn’t work out, he’d be a great stand up comedian. Stephen Malkmus also ranted on about how crap the V Festival line-up was and said he wanted to start an NME-style feud with Kasabian.
10. What was the funniest moment (music-related or otherwise)?
This was a festival filled with many chuckles for me – funny bands, funny friends and lots of funny, friendly strangers. I overheard this gem in the Idiotic Superstition Field (not its real name, but they had “dowsing classes”, which I think speaks for itself) “I’m not a violent person or anything, but if I was in labour and someone came up and held my hand and told me to get in touch with my inner chakras or something, I *would* punch them”.
11. Weirdest moment (if different)?
Doing the conga with King Creosote was quite strange.
12. Any moments of sheer terror you’d like to share?
No, it was all very terror-free.
13. Anything you wish you’d brought with you?
I could have done with my knee socks. Oh, and Susi Weaser would have been nice.
14. Anything you wish you’d left behind?
Again, I didn’t need the flip flops.
15. Please mark the following elements out of 10, with any comments:
General facilities: 8/10
Crowd / audience: 9/10
Food and drink value for money: 9/10
16. Finally – anything else you’d like to mention?
Just all the really lovely friendly people, the excellent food, the *stunning* scenery and the fantastic music. This is the best festival *EVA*.
Thanks for taking part in our humble questionnaire. Your place in heaven is assured (assuming you haven’t previously murdered anyone).
