This weekend’s festivals round-up: Bjork, Beastie Boys and Bananarama

Summer may have never really arrived and the festival season may be drawing to a close, but there are still plenty of tasty treats on offer this weekend. Here’s a round-up.
- The unlikely setting of Culzean Castle in Ayrshire is gearing up for Europe’s largest 80s music festival, Retrofest. It’s set to be ‘bigger than shoulderpads’, apparently, with the biggest 80s line-up since Live Aid.
Actually, considering how long it’s been since the power decade, they’ve done mightily well with the acts. Bananarama, Go West, Kajagoogoo, The Human League and ABC are amongst the jewels on the bill and there’ll be none of those wishy washy tribute acts. Even better for all the 80s teenyboppers who’ve now got kids – there’s a children's entertainment area and a circus. Or you could entertain yourself by relaunching as your favourite 80s idol in the dressing up tent.
- The peace and quiet of the Channel Islands will be shattered with Jersey Live. With Kasabian and The Fratellis already confirmed as headliners, the line-up’s been given a last minute superboost. The main stage will also host The Twang, Little Man Tate and Air Traffic on Saturday and Audio Bullys, Pigeon Detectives and Super Furry Animals on Sunday. Bag yourself a last minute ticket now and head for Sunday’s sunny weather forecast.
- Already mooted by my esteemed colleague as ‘the best festival line-up of the summer’, Stradbally Hall in Ireland is right to be smug about playing host to the impending Electric Picnic. The bill is immense, swinging from Jarvis Cocker and Bjork; to Iggy & The Stooges and the Jesus and Mary Chain, to the Beastie Boys, Ladytron and Polyphonic Spree. The Irish Independent has some great survival tips. Don’t celebrate with too much booze if you’re planning to drive the morning after though, as Ireland’s alcohol safety campaigners have pointed out. If all that’s whetted your appetite, you’ll just have to mope from afar – tickets have all sold out.
- It’s not just the 80s taking over Scotland this weekend - picturesque Inverarary Castle on the banks of Loch Fyne (pictured above) is welcoming the inaugural Connect Festival. Primal Scream, Bjork, LCD Soundsystem and the Beastie Boys will be on stage, and it’s sponsored by a cider company. What more could you ask? Well… if you just shouted ‘Loch Fyne oysters and cabaret courtesy of Club Noir please’, you’re in luck. More late tickets have just been released here.
