In-Tents Questioning: Lovebox Weekender (Sunday) - Glenda Young
Glenda Young, editor of Shiny Media's authority on Coronation Street, Corrieblog, attended the Lovebox Weekender last weekend. She kindly answered the Toilet's questions about the event, which featured Toots & The Maytals and The B-52's.
1. Kindly tell us your name, age and where you’re from. Now.
Glenda Young, 42, from Sunderland but live in London. Now.
2. Which festival have you recently attended?
Lovebox Weekender, Sunday 22 July.
3. Have you attended this festival before? If yes, how does this year compare?
No, this was my first ever time.
4. Which act gave the best performance, and why?
B-52’s. Because they rock the world.
5. If you could have promoted one act on the bill to headline status, who would you choose? Why?
Trojan Records had an ever-changing line up of DJs which could have warranted a bigger audience. It was really friendly, dancey and a relaxed audience that should have had a wider listenership. Is there such a word as listenership?
Also, Toots and the Maytals deserved a bigger stage because you couldn’t get near the stage to see them, it was rammed and the sound quality was bad at the back of the crowd.
6. Did your opinion of any acts change radically as a result of their performance?
Not really.
7. Nicest surprise / biggest disappointment (music-related or otherwise)?
I hadn’t been to Victoria Park before so that was a nice surprise to find out how nice and big the park really was.
8. What was the best heckle you heard?
I don’t think I heard any heckles. Are they out at this time of the year?
9. Any high-quality onstage banter you feel deserves highlighting?
DJ Derek in the Trojan Sound System was quite fun to watch and listen to.
10. What was the funniest moment (music-related or otherwise)?
Jerry Dammers playing the ska version of the original Batman theme tune was good fun.
11. Weirdest moment (if different)?
Standing at the bus stop waiting to go home afterwards and Don Letts strolled by after he’d been DJing in the park.
12. Any moments of sheer terror you’d like to share?
Nothing terrifying about the day happened. It was really lovely.
13. Anything you wish you’d brought with you?
A sun hat and shades (see 14 below).
14. Anything you wish you’d left behind?
Regulation-army-style raincoat, as I expected it to pour down (see 13 above).
15. Please mark the following elements out of 10, with any comments:
General facilities: 10/10. Toilets were ok, queues moved quickly.
Crowd / audience: 10/10
Food and drink value for money: 8/10. Food was surprisingly high quality and good. Could have been better drink-wise as there was no cider or real ale.
16. Finally – anything else you’d like to mention?
Yes, a message to all those people who queue up to drink Pimms: this ain’t no Tory-boy tea-party, it’s a festival, get a grip.
