Backlash Fodder - The Wombats

thewombats.jpgAh. The Wombats. The next big thing. They've been on telly and everything! Graced magazine pages and generally whipped people up into a frenzy. And! Whoooop! They have a single out that namechecks Joy Division! BECAUSE! GET THIS! IT'S IRONIC! Oooooh... they sooo nearly got it right. It's not ironic... it's moronic.

Indie Schmindie bands fall into two categories at the moment. Mewing self-help types who are all pained and those that like to think they're post-punk and one of us. The Wombats fall into the latter category, with their oh-so-fashionable angular guitars and talk of nights out and all that guff. In fact, they're so like us that they get taxis into town and raise their glasses to the ceiling.

When I frequent dives to dance, it's a trip on the bus and flicking through the shrapnel in my pocket. Namechecking Joy Division of course will grant them a lot of exposure as, for some reason, everyone suddenly likes Ian Curtis' gloomy (and admittedly darkly beautiful) lyrics. However, if one of these people walked a mile in one of Curtis' shoes, they'd have topped themselves long before the first LP release. Maybe that's not such a bad thing.
