Can You Gig It?: Just Jack / Scouting For Girls @ Sheperd's Bush Empire, 16.10.07
Susi Weaser, editor of marvellous girls' gadget blog Shiny Shiny, went to see Just Jack and Scouting For Girls the other night. She's been banging on about Scouting For Girls in the office for ages - how does she feel about them now they've hit the big time?
How did you rate the venue?
I hate the Shepards Bush Empire. I can’t spell shepard, and it’s crap if you’re anywhere but the floor. We were sitting right at the top, and all you can watch is the people below, watching the band. And if the people in front of you stand up and start kissing, all you can see is the people standing in front of you kissing – hi there, kids joined at the lips.
What were the crowd like?
Kissing.
Actually, it was a weird mix of older people there for Just Jack, younger girls there for Scouting for Girls and a couple of under 16s who had dads who wore skinny jeans. There was also a girl with a really, really high pitched voice.
Was the support act any good or did it send you to the bar?
It was Scouting for Girls, and they were pretty good. They were obviously thrilled about their “meteoric rise to success” and there was lots of audience participation the lead singer initiated. Being middle aged i.e. over 17, and terribly English, I hate this kind of enforced fun, but the rest of the crowd seemed to enjoy it.
Bar – rip-off or value for money?
£3.20 for a pint – it’s what you expect at these places.
Venue staff – nice or nasty?
They all seemed very nice. Obviously being Shepards Bush they were all antipodean, but that’s no reflection on their personality.
Toilets – swilling with piss, or spick and span?
They were fine. I had no strong feelings about them either way. Oh, no hang on. The hot tap wasn’t labelled hot, so I ended up scalding myself. That was unpleasant for a few seconds.
Highlight / lowlight of show
Highlight – watching friends and relations of Just Jack take advantage of their free bar by consistently chucking pints over the crowd below (the only advantage of sitting so high up your ears popped). Lowlight – did I mention the kissers??
Any other comments?
I think the fact that Just Jack has a recording studio in his parents' basement is rather sweet.
