Can You Gig It?: Of Montreal @ London ULU, 6.12.07

ofmontreal.gifThe Bag Lady editor, Laura Street, went to see indie veterans Of Montreal last week. Oh yes she did. We've been playing them quite a bit in the office recently, so how did they shape up live? Well for a kick-off they didn't dress like Widow Twanky as they have previously (see right). Let's see what else they did / didn't do.

How did you rate the venue?

It was held at ULU which is a very small venue. It’s quite small and cramped, which meant it became very stuffy throughout the gig. The bars were all very busy as well with quite slow service.

What were the crowd like?

Seemed to be quite a lot of students, which isn’t surprising as it was held in an Student Union venue! Generally quite friendly.

Was the support act any good or did it send you to the bar?

The only support that I saw were The Black Kids. They have been heralded as the next big thing by the NME, which made me want to not like them very much. They’re very similar to Architecture in Helsinki. Quite funky and a crowd pleaser!

Bar – rip-off or value for money?

Not too bad, £3 for a pint of cider. Is a student bar though so if you go on the right day you benefit from drinks promotions

Venue staff – nice or nasty?

Bar staff were friendly enough.

Toilets – swilling with piss, or spick and span?

Clean, although quite small.

Highlight / lowlight of show?

The gig got better as it went on so the encore tracks were definitely the best. The band came across as being a bit tired throughout although I think this was one of their last dates in UK tour. They did not play “Tim, wish you were born a girl” which was a shame.

Any other comments?

No. That is all.

How informative. Thank you, Laura. I don't think my colleague's pithy answers do justice to this particular band, so have a look at Of Montreal's video below as compensation. This song goes by the snappy title: "Heimdalsgate Like A Promethean Curse".
